  1. Does your system have a sump? as you mention that you have tried two HOB skimmers, are you looking for a Hang on the Back type of skimmer or sump style? If you have a sump, there are many options that will help keep the noise level down, but if you don't have a sump, many of the HOB styles tend to be a little noiser....I used to have a Eshopps HOB skimmer, and I personally didn't think it was super loud...my wife uses a Reef Octopus BH 800SBS (Its a big one though) and its pretty loud...but its a beast of a skimmer though....

I guess, to better answer your question, do you have a sump? what type of corals do you keep? It sounds like you don't have hardley any bioload (fish wise) two clownfish for a 40 breeder is not all that much bioload, and depending on what type of corals you are keeping, you just might be able to get away with just doing regular partial water changes....you might not even need a skimmer. If your keeping mostly soft corals, then I would say you might be safe to just do regular water changes.

  2. I am looking for unique Birdsnest frags, primarily Ponape and other different kinds. Here is what I currently have and are not looking for...

    ORA Neon Green

    Pink

    Green Tip

    Orange with Green/Blue

    Bird of Paradise

Again, the list above is what I already have, and are not looking for, but if you have any birdsnest frags that are not like the ones above, let me know...

Looking for Ponape and any others that might be interesting, I would love to get a frag of something like this if anyone knows where to get something like it...They call it a green tipped pink birdsnest

  3. I use a filter sock, but its a PAIN in the patootie(Spelling?)....Partly becuase of my setup, but if it was easier to change out, I don't think it would be near the hassle...I kind of chaulked it up as just another method of filtration, and just another way of trying to keep the water as clean as possible, so if I look at it that way, as a pain it is to change out all the time, everything and anything helps...so I will keep using one.

  4. Yeah, my leathers do that too, from what I have read (various places) is they tend to do it when they are growing, They shed thier skin so to speak, It seems to be a very common thing for leathers to shut down and then shed this mucusy skin, and once the skin sloughs off, its polyps will come back out. As far as timing, I would say everyone is probably going to expereince different things, some systems (ie lighting, flow, ec..ect.) will grow leathers like crazy, so they probably will expereince this type of thing more often, I have never read anything about how often they do it, just that they do it and its normal.

Good to hear it its back to normal....Cool looking leather by the way!

  5. hawk fish is dead I want out of this will probably be giving things away soon

Sorry to hear about your Hawk fish, Don't give up...Everyone has thier ups and downs, I know I sure have, but you can't let a set back cause you to give up entirely....Anytime you deal or work with living creatures, things can happen, they can die, and sometimes it almost seems beyond your control, Everything else looks good still doesn't it? You still have a beautiful tank with beautiful corals, just unfortunatley minus a Hawk Fish....

    Again sorry for your loss....

Looking back, it says you added the Hawkfish on Friday the 4th, and today monday the 7th its dead? I would almost say it wasn't doing well prior to you getting it, did it come from a LFS? I would almost check back with them, and take in a water sample...I know most places don't have guarantees but 48 hours and its dead, seems pretty quick to me...Sometimes though fish just die, I bought a fish, looked healthy, added it to a tank, with fish that had been there thriving for a long time, and within 3-4 days it was gone, the rest of the fish continue to do well, and are still thriving....so I know its not my tank...it was the fish I purchased...If it was something wrong with the tank, the other fish would be perishing as well....

  6. Awsome! Looks really good! and to think you built that thing! Awesome! I bet its a great feeling to see corals in a tank you built yourself from the ground up.....Major congrats on a sweet build.

  7. This is for a 29g with a 10g sump...

I am getting an overflow that is rated for 600 GPH (CPR CS90 HOB)

You should drill that baby....and get a Glass-Holes.com 700gph overflow, I was totally freaked out drilling my 40b, but once I did it it was a peice of cake, super easy....

The CPR overflow is what $90-$100? The Glass-Holes.com Overflow is only $79.00 and comes with everything you need to drill it (other than the actual drill, but it has the glass hole bit to drill the hole) Its super easy, looks really nice, and to me its safer than relying on suction or syphon. Just a thought....

  8. I have a 700gph Glass-Holes.com overflow on my 40b with 20L sump and I am using a Mag 7 as my return, with a height of 3-4 feet your probably going to loose at least 100-150gph having to push the water that high, I am guessing I am in the 500gph range right now...as I have two returns and it splits, so I am guessing that reduces it some more. I was going to go a little bigger, but figured its enough for the sump/refugium and I don't want to push too much water, the Mag 7 I think is a safe gph, at least in my opinion. Its a pretty quite pump, and seems to get pretty good reviews.

Hopefully others will chime in, I have heard good things about Ehiem pumps as well, but they seem a little bulky, where the Mag 7 is not super huge, at least to me it isn't.

Best of luck with your setup...

  9. You know what they say "opinions are like armpits' date='everybody has one & they all stink" (laugh) The UPS tracking number says it will be here by the end of the day Friday. If I beat the UPS man here I pitty the dude. I'll be like a big ole slobbery dog running at him! jumping up & down(clap)(clap)(clap)[/quote']

Sooo?.....You get it yet? Is it up and running? What are you initial thoughts on it? I would love to hear your opinion on weither or not you like it or not...

  10. Well I have the Reef Octopus NWB110, There was a short discussion about them in the link below, I have found it to be a good skimmer, rated for up to 100 gallons, its not too expensive (Around $150-$175 range) and it has worked pretty well for me, I have been very happy with it. It was easy to setup, easy to dail in, and not super expensive, but the quality is good I thought, you know when you pickup a skimmer and feel it, sometimes they feel light weight and cheap, this doesn't its well put together and sturdy, not cheaply made in my opinion....its been working great on my 40b with 20L sump.....if I had to do it all over again, I honestly think I would go right back to this option....

  11. soooo....... does that mean you think an external pump would be a GOOD choice for my tank???

If your directing that question to me, then yes....I should have voted for External, but take my opinion with a grain of salt, as I don't have a big tank nor have an external pump, further more I have never used an External pump, BUT....if I did have a big tank and wanted to move larger volume of water, I do think I would be looking for an External pump....I clicked to vote prior to reading the whole thread, after reading it was for a 120 gallon, I thought..."hmmm...Yeah I should have voted External"....lol

I think most people who have larger tanks and are looking to move larger volumes of water (especially for SPS) seem to go the external pump route...but thats just my observation....

  12. I remember when you asked about the duncans at the meeting! They grow fast but I think you had an incredible growth!

Same for the magicians. Good job.

I think the prices are more than fair.

Free bump for a good deal. Worst case scenario you can trade them in on some LFS

Thanks for the free bump...(rock2)..I have since moved the Duncans to the sand bed, which has given them lots of room/space for more growth, if they don't sell I might just keep them and see how big they will get, but I was shocked at how fast they grow, its the fastest growing coral I have, and that includes Xenia..LOL, I also don't feed it all that much either, with how fast it is growing new heads, I feed sparingly...its a really cool coral....

Same with the Magicians, they are one of my favorites, and have grown lots....its really no big deal if they don't sell, I'll keep those too, I wouldn't mind if all my rock was covered with magicians...

  13. Just my .02c.....I personally don't think your prices are high, I have visited your website many times and have even put stuff in my cart before, only to not pull the trigger....why?.....Shipping, I have had very bad luck with having things shipped to me, and while it does only cost $35+ to ship, that adds to the price.....for example if I wanted a $25 frag of one of your Birdsnests....well that $25 frag is now $60....and it is going to have to be shipped to me....unless I am going to make a large (multli Frag) purchase its not worth for me, I do go to portland several times a month at least, and its sucks your so far away, but its just easier for me to pick something out at one of the shops and within a few hours its in my tank. The group buys I think are cool, and I personally look forward to the next group buy that is directed toward you, as I would like to get one or two things....

For me its the shipping, not the prices, if I lived closer, within a few hours drive, I would love to come pick the stuff up, I just don't like having to ship things....I do think you have good, reasonable prices.

  14. Might want to shoot Grassi (Alex) a PM, I know he had some really nice Milli frags for a steal of a deal, Very beautiful Green/Yellow...

OOOppps my bad...your looking for a specific kind of Milli, Sorry about that....I read your post too quickly and caught that you where looking for a Milli....but for some reason didn't catch that you where looking for a specific kind...my bad.

  15. Good To see those magicians grew pretty fast for you. Oh and reading rainbow was awesome!

Sent from my SCH-I500 using Tapatalk

They did really well for me, the Magicians we got from you are my favorite zoanthids (hence my avatar(naughty)), I love em!.......Oh and it was LeVar Burton that was Awesome!....lol(laugh)
