  1. from what i understand, ferric oxide is the coffee ground stuff that makes up both rowaphos and phosban. this material absorbs phosphate and does not release it after saturation. depending on how high your phosphates were to begin with, the material could exhaust itself within two weeks or six weeks...i probably would assume it was exhausted by six weeks.

aluminum oxide, the white balls sold under phosguard or brightwells extras phos, will absorb lots of phosphate quickly...but then releases it back in the water after five or so days, from my understanding. i even read that aluminum levels in the aquarium increase after its use and it may or may not have a negative affect on leathers.

i dont tend to use the AO unless there are high levels of phosphate. i may use it initially to get a substantial amount out before i switch to FO to maintain a lower level. i prefer phosban because of its granule size. rowaphos has such a fine grain that it often ends up all over the bottom of my sump.

I researched seachem products before i used them. this is off their website.

In recent years, there has been speculation that aluminum oxide based phosphate removers like PhosGuard™ release aluminum into the water and subsequently damage corals. The evidence to support this claim was largely anecdotal.

So, through a series of controlled experiments in both freshwater and saltwater, we intended to address both the question of aluminum solubility and aluminum toxicity. The results of these experiments show that under reef conditions (pH near 8) there is no detectable soluble aluminum released from alumina. Under conditions of low pH and high dosage levels, soluble aluminum can be released from alumina; at three times the label dosage rate, we detected 0.2 mg/L aluminum at a pH of 5.3.

Additionally, aluminum oxide is not easily absorbed into the cell to cause negative reactions. Even at three times the dose of PhosGuard™, soft-bodied corals such as Sarcophyton remain unaffected.

  2. I am afraid to go back lol. If I do I will walk out with allot more then some egg crate. You guys have to many good deals.

LOL, i would say free is a heck of a good deal. i could leave some outside the door. ;)

  3. Everything in todays society is so sex driven. My friends have a drive thru coffee shop, and just got put out of business because two girls opened one down the street and wear nothing but bikinis. 4-5 cars on each side all day long. And I mean non stop busy. I guess it was just a matter of time.

  4. Well if you really want to stretch that $490 to it's maximum potential then drive the additional 10 minutes north on I-5 to my shop. I'll give you 15% off your purchase as a first time in-store customer. I also have one of the largest coral selections anywhere in the NW and since that is what your looking for........
