  1. Hello, I have a purple tang that is now infested with ich. I have a lot of questions about treating ich. I lost a hippo tang several months ago while trying to treat it for ich using the hypo salinity treatment. From what I understand, the copper treatments (cupramine) are much more effective. Is this the best way to treat for ich? I have a 24 gallon tank that I can set up and use as a treatment tank so that I don't kill my shrimp, snails and starfish in my main tank. Questions: - Is *non-treatment* an option? Obviously my tank is already infested and so far only the tang has it currently. Can I let it run it's course without doing any special treatment? The tang seems healthy and is enduring the sickness so far. But what are the consequences of not treating it? - Even if I treat the fish, I understand the ich is now in my tank and may come back over time. Right? - I keep finding tiny white specks on my glass about the size of a pinhead that have tiny little fingers coming out of them. Are those the ich parasites hanging out in my tank? Any advice you can all give will be most appreciated. Thanks! Trever
  2. Andy gave me the suggestion of using a needle and some fishing line to "sew" them down to a rock. It worked great for some xenias I got from dsoz. After it attached to the rock, I clipped the strings off.
  3. I love the new look Rob. Welcome. If you're taking feature requests, I'd love to be able to subscribe to an RSS feed of the forum posts (unless that's already available and I just haven't figured out how to subscribe to RSS). I prefer that over subscribing to email notifications of posts. Thanks again. Trever
  4. Thanks Garrett Here are some images of the great corals I got from Garrett. Thanks again!
  5. Haha, yeah. I don't really regret getting it but it was WAY more freaky than I expected when I put it in the tank. My wife and I both just squirmed as it looked like a giant tarantula writhing across the rock to find a place to hide. I totally did not expect that reaction. One of those emotion creation moments I'm sure I'll never forget in my reefing experience.
  6. Thanks so much Garrett for letting me come by, spending time talking with me and showing me all your nice stuff and mostly thanks for so much great new livestock. Everything made it home great and looks happy this morning. I hope to get pictures soon. Andy helped me remove that monster growing on the big leather's rock (wish I had gotten pictures of it first). The leather looks amazing, btw. A very nice piece for my sparsely populated tank. Best part of all was my 3 year old asking so many questions about all the new stuff. He loves it! Oh, one more thing. I'm wondering if getting that big serpent sea star was a good idea or not. That thing CREEPED me out! Wow, watching that thing slither around the rocks sent chills down my spine. What a cool creature though. My son will love it when he sees it crawling around. Thanks again so much man for helping me get a fairly new tank kickstarted with livestock. Pics to follow soon. Trever
  7. Yeah, I had that happen with my first Hydor Theo heater. It was only a few weeks old when it started exhibiting the behavior. So I returned it for an exchange and now the new unit (only a couple weeks old) is doing the same thing. They are brand new units so it's making me think I'm doing something wrong.
  8. No cats. Just a 3 year old but I don't think he's tall enough to reach the top of the tank. It's a 125 gallon tank. Been missing over a week now. No signs of it whatsoever. Very very strange. I once had my coral beauty missing for a day but turns out he was just hiding real well.
  9. I bought a six-line wrasse about 6 weeks ago. He seemed to be doing well with the other tank inhabitants (2 clowns and a coral beauty). He appeared healthy and hadn't had any scuffles that I could see with the other fish. A little over a week ago I realized he was gone. Missing, AWOL, vanished...with no evidence of what may have happened. I checked all around the exterior of the tank. It didn't look like he took up carpet diving. I checked the refugium. Didn't see him there. I checked my overflows. It was hard to see in there, but I didn't see him anywhere there either. I haven't seen any corpses or fish parts floating around anywhere that might indicate he was torn up and eaten. Some have suggested maybe he's hiding in the sand. It's been a long time since I've seen him and I can't imagine he'd hide that long in the sand. The tank does have alot of places to hide in the rocks but I've never gone that long without at least catching a glimpse of the fish. Anyone have any idea what may have happened?
  10. My santa list includes - Electronic thermometer with an alarm (having trouble with my heaters overheating the tank) - Automatic top off kit - Moon lights - Some MH ballasts - And lots of livestock (new big tank and hardly anything in it.
  11. Now I know where the baby trochus came from in my tank!! I bet it was a hitchhiker on one of the rocks you gave me. I hadn't had any trochus in my tank yet (not able to find them in stock when I ask for them at the LFS). All the sudden this tiny pencil eraser sized snail appeared in my tank. It's been a couple months now and the snail has grown so fast! It's very fascinating watching it appear and grow.
  12. PM sent on both tangs.
  13. PM Sent for the reflectors.
  14. I am interested I would like the toadstool and possibly the hammerhead please. I am in Vancouver and can probably pick them up tomorrow (Sunday)
  15. Thank you for the great time. I really appreciate the xenia frag and winning the purple LTA was unbelievably exciting. Since my tank is still a bit young I'm asking Andy to baby sit it for me. Though I'm excited for the day it will be "coming home". I've been looking at the purple LTA's as one of my additions to my tank once it's mature enough. The xenia frag looks very nice and seems to be doing fine in the tank so far. Thanks Dsoz.
  16. Yeah, you know. It started as a plan to go from 29 to 55. Then one of the LFS said, "If you're going to go 55, you should bump up to 70 or 90 to get the extra depth for aquascaping". Then as I was talking around, someone (Andy. ) said, "If you're going to 90, you might consider just bumping up to 120ish..." Andy pointed me to the great deal on a used 125 tank so that's what I ended up with. I'm glad I did. It was a tremendous amount of work putting things together (getting the tank, cleaning it, building the stand and plumbing, etc). I am glad I went this route rather than another intermediate tank. We had just torn out a fireplace in our living room which made a perfect spot for the 6 foot tank.
  17. I bought this light on July 31 this year for a 29 gallon tank. I love the light with it's two timers, 2 x actinics, 2 x 10,000K bulbs. It also has moon lights for a completely automatic light system. Now that I've moved everything in to a 125 Gallon tank, I no longer need this light. :( I'm putting it up for sale. The light is a little over $200 new and since it's only 3 months old and still in like-new condition I'd like to ask $150 cash. I'll also consider trades for T5 actinic 4' DIY parts or possibly some livestock. Please email me at treverwilhelm@gmail.com or PM me if you are interested.
  18. After a couple months of work getting things together, I finally have my 29 gallon tank migrated over to a 125 gallon tank. Thanks mostly to Andy for all his help, guidance and advice (I could have never done it without his inspiration) and to my wife (I can't believe she let me get away with this). So far I have the 125 gallon tank on a home-made stand which still needs some finish cabinetry. It's in progress but will take a while. I bought about 80 lbs of dried Eco Rox from bulk reef supply and was very pleased with the rock. Once I moved the 40 lbs or so of the rock I had in the small tank, I was pretty happy with the rock. I made a home-made acrylic sump with refugium. Currently I'm running on some borrowed MH lights (thanks Andy!) on a timer power strip. I'm hoping to be able to add some Actinics soon. Here are some pictures.
  19. Hi Darrell. Glad to see you post. Andy, Darrell just sits a few cubes further south of us. We're all very close together in the same aisle. Weird how it's such a small world. I'm really interested in how your LED lights work out. The initial high cost seems daunting but the idea of not replacing bulbs every year and worrying as much about heat seems like a good investment. Trever
  20. Thanks for the welcome. It's funny you recognized Jason's tank. It really cleaned up nicely and I appreciate his help in getting started with a nice tank. The bottom of my cabinet is particle board that is laminated with the white plastic coating. I sealed around the edge with white silicone sealant I had from a bathroom tiling project. I know I need to cut some holes in the back for ventilation and wiring. I had the back on mostly for sturdiness then realized I need some holes. So I'll have to cut them before I get much further. Ahh yes, Owen loves "his" tank. It's amazing how the mind of a three year old is like a sponge absorbing everything they see. He makes me proud.
  21. Hello everyone, My name is Trever and I'm a reef-a-holic. Well, actually I'm just getting started but I've become fascinated with the hobby. About 10 years ago I started a small 29 gallon fish only saltwater tank. When I moved out of an apartment into a house, I took the tank down and never set it up again...until now. My 3 year old son wanted a fish tank for his birthday and that was all the encouragement I needed to get my tank out again. I have a 29 gallon setup that is doing quite well thanks to alot of help from Andy (a friend and co-worker and member of the boards). In my 29 gallon tank, I have two percs and a coral beauty. I also have a fire shrimp, three emerald crabs, half a dozen hermits and a couple dozen various snails. I also have a nice feather duster. Andy has been gracious enough to help me get started with some corals and inverts. He gave me several Zoa's, torch coral, mushrooms, palys and a couple sponges. Everything seems to be doing very well so far in the tank. I'm now in the process of putting together a 125 gallon tank. With Andy's help and lots of research online, I've gotten the acrylic sump built, tank stand built (minus the cabinetry which will come soon) and the tank is in place. It's mostly plumbed and I'm waiting for my pumps to come in. It's clearly going to be an expensive hobby but so far I'm enjoying it more than I can express. The whole process has been tremendously educational for me and my three year old son. He has affectionately named our fish (Nemo, baby Nemo, Carlin - the angel fish, Dusty - the feather duster, and Coop - the shrimp). All of the emeralds are just called "Mean Crabs" because they were fighting in the bag the day we brought them home from the LFS. He's learned all about molting, feeding and how the fish and crabs and snails interact. It's great to have something he and I can get excited about together. Here are some pictures of the 29 gallon. I apologize for the clarity. I'm still learning how to shoot tank pictures. Here is some of my progress so far on the new tank.
