  1. Feed him!

I killed a goby by making that mistake. The sand sifting supplements their diet, kind of like a snack. Gobies actually need a lot of food. I would get grumped at mine because he stole shrimp from my sea star. Turned out he was starving.

Gosh, I feel the old guilt coming back just writing about it...

Moral of the story: Feed him meaty food!

  2. I bought a chunk of chaeto from a LFS and it had this algae tangled up within it. I planted it in my refugium with the chaeto and it is doing well. Now that it is thriving, I'm wandering about it's morals.

What kind of algae is it? Will it take over? Will it go sexy and crash my tank?

  3. Flame Scallop

He doesn't swim around, but the little bugger likes to cram himself farther and farther into the crevices between my rocks. He's stronger than you'd think and moves my rocks out of place.

  4. I had a BTA die in my 30 over christmas break and it wiped out almost everything. Hair algae took over and decimated all it could get it's grubby hands on. Better try and find that sucka and pull him out (if he's dead) before you end up having to scrub 40# of live rock and throwing out dead corals.

  5. The polyps afflicted polyps aren't even distinguishable. They just turned to a gray slime, like any other dead thing in the tank. There are a few polyps that still look like polyps, so I will try moving them out of the light and flow.

  6. Update!

I cleaned all the algae off and let them sit under fairly strong current. They started making a comeback, new polyps grew up and started to open a little, then BAM! they closed back up and now they are melting.

What happened? Did they open their eyes and decide it wasn't worth it?

  7. Ok, I've been looking at float valves and it appears most require drilling. My sump is mad of glass, so that really isn't an option. Am I screwed?

I guess I could get an electric one, but geez, that means buying a pump, too.

  8. Hmmm...mine did that once because I lowered into further down into my sump and raised it's water level. I, too, lots a lot of water all over.

Does it a flow adjustment valve? I had to fine tune that to get it cranking goop and not spilling over.

  9. OSU is pretty well up and coming. They got a ginormic donation from some lady and they are adding a whole bunch of new stuff. I know some people who graduated from the Vet school and some who are in it now and haven't heard any complaints. I think the biggest difference will be the name. If you want to get a job with a local practice, then Oregon will be fine, if you want to get a job on Animal Planet, then better do Ohio.

  10. Yea, I kind of looked at the Aquacontroller stuff, but they are kind of out of my league for now. I don't really/can't afford all the pH, temp and such controllers. All I need is something to turn on and off my lights without burning down the house.

  11. So I've got my new lighting set up and I'm trying to get down the wiring (pluggin'). I have daylights/actincs and moon LED lights, and the lights for my sump/refugium. I would like to wire it so that the main tank lights are on during the day, and the moon and sump lights are on at night. I also have the return pump, a heater, a protein skimmer, and a grounding probe to plug in. Even now, without my new lights hooked up (it has three plugs for the daylights, actinics, and moons) It looks like a fire hazard octopus.

    Anyone have experience with X10?

Any recommendations on wiring all this as simply as possible? I've looked at the timer strips that turn on nights and days, but I've been reading that they don't work and are even more of a fire hazard.

    Thanks!

  12. Sorry to kind of hijack this thread...Do you (or anyone) put a covering of some sort over your tank? I am putting in some PCs that clip to the side of the tank (elevated clips, of course). I have an anorexic goby (a whole 'nother issue) whose suicidal tendencies may cause him to throw himself out of the tank.

That and I don't want to speed evap anymore, my office if humid enough now.

    Any suggestions?

  13. I have a orange spotted prawn goby, I have had him for about 2 weeks.

Does anyone have any experience getting them to eat? I had a diamond goby once (I thought that's what he was, thats why I got him) and he would come out and eat from my hand. This guy though will only make occasional grabs. I've tried diced shrimp, pellets, and brine shrimp all to little avail. At most he'll eat a pellet or brine shrimp or two, but the rest will blow past his face. I hate to see him starve, but I also hate to boost my nitrates because he won't eat. The current past his hole is pretty strong, so small stuff doesn't stick around.

    Any advice?

  14. It is a goby, of some sort. That is actually a question I have to pose (I may bring this over to the fish forum too); what kind of goby? It was sold to me as an orange spotted sleeper goby, but it doesn't quite look the same. It's spots are too round, it has that black patch on it's chest, and its eyes are too bulgy. Is it just a juvenile or a different species?

    I have a

    30 gal +10 gal sump/ refugium w/DSB

    ~40lbs rock

1 goby (unknown as of yet)

    1 percula

    crappy jimmy-rigged lighting (for now...)

    zoos, xenia, ricordea

  15. I think splitting into "cohorts" may not be a bad idea either. Maybe not everyone can meet in Albany or Portland, but the different regions could get together as they plan. In other words, have a Southern and Northern Cohort with separate meet and greets. Just having it in Portland will once again isolate those who can't go to the monthly meetings either.

    Does that make sense?

  16. Alright, I've been a newbie for about 3 months now. I think I can post some pictures from my tank now. For bragging rights, of course.;)
