I recently got quite a bit of uncured live rock from Sean, and I am very pleased with it. I got a box each of Kaleni, tonga bolder, and tonga branch. The branch is awesome, the boulder has some nice caves through it, and the Kaleni has some wonderful color to it.

Not really, more along the same thought as a refugium (from what I understand) for nutrient control and pod production.

Has anyone here ever done a DIY turf scrubber?

I would really like to try one and am looking for any tips or pointers before I try to build one.

I've tried everywhere I can think of as well. I have been told that your best bet is to just buy it online and have it shipped to your house...sure seems easier than running all over the place.

The pots are sometimes the most fun! Prettier than any live rock.

And houseplants that bloom sure liven up the dreary winters.

Aw, Stacy! Don't give up! I have uuuhhh....let me count....four, maybe five cats wandering around here in the jungle, and for the most part they leave the plants alone. I do have to protect the spider plants, but that's just because those give the kitties a "high" when they eat them.

I have a hoya that is just now setting buds...I can't wait until it blooms. My AV's took a pretty hard hit with the move, but they are bouncing back now...I propatate them so I have tons. My favorite is a mini trailer that is called "Rob's Gundaroo". He is almost always blooming, despite some abuse.

I grow named varieties of african violets and am always looking for a few new ones. You meet fellow growers in the strangest places, so I thought I'd try here. Anyone else have a passion for houseplants along with reefing?

The beaches all along the south Yachats area are covered in tidepools. Mike and I rent a house over there several times a year just to watch the ocean and the tide pools.

Also, for those with kids or who do not enjoy twisting their ankles on those lovely round rocks, the lighthouse in newport (I believe) has a tidepool interaction area where even wheelchairs can get down to the tidepools.

As I recall Cape whatchmacallit between florence and yachats also has a trail down to the tidepools around that area.

First, you need to decide on some basic things so you will have a better idea of what you will be needing for equipment and such. What are your plans for this tank? Fish Only, Fish Only With Live Rock, or a full blown reef?

Is there something you are really wanting to keep in this tank? A certain type of fish or coral?

I will be setting up MH over my tank soon and will need to acclimate the tank to the new lights.

I have read that some start the lights high and slowly lower them, some start with only an hour a day and gardually increase the duration, and some use the eggcrate and 14 layers of screen method.

How do you feel is the best way to go about this?

I lived in central oregon for most of my life. There are many, many saltwater tanks there, and there is not a store worth visiting now. 10 years or so ago there was a good one in Bend, somewhere behind Wendy's. My mom had a HUGE tank, and then sold in to my MIL.

I think if you truely put the time and effort into some serious research and planning you will be ahead of the game.

The banner looks great!

Use different air pumps and utensils for each type of culture. Also, if they are in the same area, keep the phyto above the pods, and the pods above the brine...the reverse of the food chain. I have had brine shrimp get into my phyto if they are near each other.

I do not have a photo right now, and I'm pretty sure I won't be able to get one before I move, but I do have 7 one gallon jars set up to culture phyto and pods.

Be VERY careful about cross-contamination. That is what almost always causes my crashes.

I care for 3 at my part-time job. Smart little snots. If you need some ideas for food let me know. We feed an awesome food at work.
