big24kid Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 Hello all, my friend came to work with a cup of water from her tank. In it she had 5 little creatures that looked like jellyfish. They were about half this size of a pencil eraser. They were pulsing around just like jellyfish. Has anyone ever heard of this and have any idea what types could actually make it into a tank. This population is in her 55 gal tank. She has not added anything to this tank in 6 or 7 months. She estimates there are around 250 swimming in her tank. They appeared one day after she did some cleaning in her tank. Any ideas would be great. And no I don't have a picture. Quote
Lowman Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 They could be hydroids. Try to get a picture if possible Quote
reefboy Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 never heard of this in 20+ years so need pic's but nothings impossible I know that one stage of a jellyfishes life is spent much like coral then they pop loose to free swim so you never know. Quote
mrgreenthumb Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 i'm 99% sure with your description that they are the medusa stage of hydroids, I saw them very frequently in my seahorse tanks because they had no natural predator in there. They reproduce very quickly when they have no predator. They most commonly come in with brine shrimp, however the sky is the limit, I have seen them come in on live rock as well. Quote
