Beckie
Many corals have different lighting needs. I get that Halides are "high". What is medium and low? How does one measure what their lighting falls under? (scratch)
MadReefer
Medium and low would be middle to lower in the tank while high is nearer the top. The middle can be brightest, the sides might be low, between rocks might be low. It all depends on the setup of the tank. You can get a PAR reader to test your tank. I have never done this so I don't know much about them. If a coral looks happy and has good color than it's probably in good light.
Beckie
I am looking to add to a new tank. Many say "they need med light", that one needs high light. I don't want to kill things in the figuring out stage.
markdadof2
I have 150w MH over my nano - the lower light corals go down towards the sand - the high light lovers are on top of the rocks near the light. Some of the mushrooms are in dark areas and they do fine. My Xenia seems to take over and grow anywhere (want some?).
MadReefer
If you just have 4 48" T5s for light than I would avoid anything that needs high lighting. But it is possible to make your light work for this; you would have to put things right in the middle near the top. Anything that needs moderate or medium light should work near the middle of your tank as long as nothing is blocking the light. Anything that needs low light should work on the edges and bottom of your tank.
pledosophy
I keep high light corals towards the top and middle of my tank with 4 T5's. Low light corals go in shade or on the bottom. JME
Beckie
I do have 4 t5's. Thanks for the help, gives me a place to start. I find myself watching hrs a day. Adding a few things to add color/movement should be fun.
