andy
One branch of my ice blue acro is having a rough time of it. It isn't STNing or RTNing, I've seen enough of those to know them. It just seems that diatoms are slowly overgrowing the previously healthy branch. It started maybe a week ago (about the time I upgraded my ballasts) with a very light dusting of golden brown midway down the branch, then appeared near the tip, then progressed to what you see now. I'm going to have to clip the whole branch :( Any ideas on what's going on? The rest of the colony seems perfectly healthy, not bleaching or losing tissue. Everything else in the tank seems to be doing great. SG: 36ppm Alk: 10 Ca: 470 Mg: 1400 pH: 7.9 - 8.2 NO3/NO2/NH4: basically zero
impur
Diatoms wouldn't kill it. I would guess that branch died back and the diatoms took advantage of the real estate. Did you change your photo period at all when you changed ballasts? Or did you raise the height of the light?
andy
The new ballast is a lot more powerful than the previous (the old one was underdriving the bulbs by a good amount); I raised the bulbs and dialed back the photoperiod to compensate, but I guess that branch got stressed. impur
That would be my guess. The rest looks ok, i'm sure it will grow back over that branch.
