Doug29
Do I need to have gas exchange in the display or with the exchange in the sump work?
andy
The vast majority occurs wherever your skimmer is. It doesn't matter if it is in the sump, the display or in a HOB.
Higher Thinking
Gas exchange is occurring wherever you have surface agitation on your water. Most pumps push water around in such a way that you get ripples across the surface. Those ripples facilitate gas exchange.
Doug29
OK thanks I have sea twirls but ones not turning so I have both of them pointing into the tank for flow. But I have a bigger skimmer then I really need and the overflow pipe is dumping into the sump so I have more exchange there
andy
The gas exchange in the skimmer happens internally, when the bubbles mix with the water -- the surface area of all those bubbles is far, far greater than the surface area of the tank or the sump. The bubbles are not only stripping dissolved organics, they're also oxygenating the water.
spllbnd2
Surface agitation will promote gas exchange in our tanks. Cheers, Alex
Mandinga
The gassier the better! Not something my wife would necessarily agree with, but oh well. It is a huge factor in the chemical reactions that are taking place all day long in a reef tank...expelling excess Co2, stirring Oxygen, and much much more:)
