Algae
I've always heard that glass is required for DE MH fixtures to reduce UV radiation but not SE. I have SE mogul Lumen Bright pendant fixtures that I am installing that come with glass in place. Anyone have an idea of why? Needed?
Kshack
The glass is to protect the fixture from salt splash. Keeps the shinny metal much cleaner. Not necessary (from a UV standpoint), but nice to have.

The large Lumen Bright pendants are usually mounted over 12" from the surface so there would be a reduced amount of salt vapor rising to the the reflector surface. However, after living next to the coast I know that any salt vapor will oxidize metal in even what seems like a somewhat distant proximity. I've also heard that the glass reduces PAR values by up to 15%.
impur
The UV shield is in the glass on SE bulbs, so you don't need the glass on the fixture
Mitchell
Check out this article: http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2004/8/aafeature Here is an excerpt from that article: "Aren't Mogul-base (Single-Ended) Metal Halide Lamps Shielded For UVR? Yes, and No. The outer glass envelope surrounding the inner arc tube attenuates UVR but very poorly in many cases." I would use UV filtering glass on all halides no matter if they are single or double ended. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk
