Edan's Clownhouse
I could use some advice on how to make a good looking foam background to my new reef tank. It has a black plastic background at the moment. I want it to look like a reef wall. Any help is greatly appreciated. (rock2)
Mr S
I cut black egg crate to fit the size of the back of the tank and them did all my foam work on the crate and popped it into the tank when completed. I would make lots of ledges. Some people have sprinkled sand onto the drying foam. It is basically up to you. It dries relatively fast. Make sure you have the egg crate fit tight because it is incredibly buoyant when you put it in the tank. I made sure mine was wedged in real tight. AquaticEngineer
Is your tank dry right now or is it running? If you're just starting and its a dry tank I would spray the foam right onto the tank, then you have no worries about it floating at all because its bonded to the tank. I do all mine out of nothing but foam, no rock, no sand. I pour rock salt on top of the foam as it is setting up to add texture and then use epoxy paint to make it look like real rock. Peppie
Maybe this will help I zip tied the rocks to the eggcrate then applied Becketts Black Pond Foam in between the rocks
wanareef
And when your done it should look like this: kind of hard to see but there are 4 basketball size rocks (that I made using the pond foam to glue them together) in front of the "foam rock wall"
