HI I JUST RETURNED INTO THE HOBBY AFTER 12 YEARS GONE FROM REEF AT LEAST.IM A ELECTRICIAN BY TRADE SO I WANTED TO GO THE MOST EFFICIENT WAY POSSIBLE.THIS IS WHAT I HAVE FOR EQUIPMENT IN MY 120 GALLON REEF TANK. LETS START WITH THE TANK. 4FTX2FT 120 GALLON. WHY? BECAUSE ANY LONGER WOULD HAVE MENT MORE LIGHT AND THEY ARE THE MOST EXPENSIEVE PART OF THE SYSTEM. SO AS FOR LIGHTS I WENT WITH THE BEST I COULD FIND THAT WERE NOT TO SPENDY WAS RADONS. SO I HAVE 2. TWO MP40 WITH BATTERY BACK UP AND FOR RETURN PUMP WATER BLASTER 5000 BY REEF OCTOPUS. 1300 GPH ONLY 60 WATTS. WITH TWO 3/4 RETURNS WITH 1 1/2 DRAIN TO A 25 GALLON SUMP. THAT HAS A GFO-CARBON REACTOR WITH A 404 PUMP MINI JET 5 WATTS, BIO PELLET REACTOR WITH 20 WATT PUMP,2 HEATERS ONE 200W AND 300WATT VIA QUA TITANIUM DIGITAL. AND SKIMMER PACIFIC COAST IMPORTS RPS 2000 WITH 18 WATT CIR PUMP AND MAXI 1200 INTAKE PUMP.ALSO BUBBLE MAGUS T101 DOSING PUMP CAL,ALK,MAG. NO FANS, NO TIMERS, NO CHILLER.ALSO ADDED A FLOAT IN SUMP OFF RODI WATER SYSTEM 70 FT AWAY WITH NO BUSTER PUMP. RAN LINE UNDER HOUSE.I HAVE LPS ANS SPS CORALS AND NO PROBLEM WITH THE RADONS KEEPING THEM HAPPY.LAST TWO ELECTRIC BILL WAS ONLY 32 DOLLARS DIFFRENCE SINCE TANK WAS SET UP. LAST 120 GALLON I HAD WAS AROUND 110 DOLLARS A MONTH TO OPERATE.I LOVE NEW TECH EQUIPMENT. IT DOES MAKE A DIFFRENCE WITH NO BULB CHANGE COST EITHER.ALWAYS LOOK AT WATTS ON PUMPS IT MATTERS. GOOD LUCK.

jeez a $110 to operate?! That sounds a little much...I have more than a dozen systems (some in an unheated garage), my house is from the 20s.

That would take 1500 watts on 24 hours for the whole month at 10 cents a kilowatt hour (which is a high rate).

Working it backwards, with your 32$, that means you use about an average of 450 watts per 24 hours, that would mean your heaters are probably on...get those off and you will really hit paydirt
