jmetz32
im doing a fowlr 180 gallon. not drilled sadly... and my stand is very short and cannot hold a sump underneath or i would use a hob overflow... but anyways.. i have 2 aquaclear 110's on it now. 1 magnum 350 and one other idk brand canister rated for 55 gallons. then about 150 lbs of rock. im going to get rid of one aquaclear and trade for another canister and get a hob skimmer soon. but for what i have now, is this enough? i also have some strong koralia power heads.. thanks
cellowithgills
I would try to get a HOB skimmer before another canister or power filter. Skimmers take the crap out of the water before it turns into nitrates and causes problems. Normal filters try to convert ammonia as fast as possible so they build up nitrates really fast with messy fish.
impur
The bacteria in your live rock will do the filtration. You just need to worry about nutrient export, so a HOB skimmer would be helpful IMO. Make sure you don't use the ceramic circles in the canisters, and if you use some sort of filter pads in there be sure to clean them regularly. MVPaquatics
agreed...no bioball type things, and I dont use mechanical filtration much either. They would only really be useful for housing chemical medias and flow. Use future money on skimmer
jmetz32
okay! thanks for the info! why not ceramic circles? what should I have in the canisters/ aquaclear? there is ceramics cycinders in both aquaclears and alil bit of ceramics in the 55 rated canister with some bio-balls and filter pad.. the magnum 350 has just the wheel type pad in center and sponge stuff on bottom. suggestions on that as well? i had a carbon cartridge for the magnum 350 but stepped on it accidently and it broke. Gill
My dad used to keep angles back in the seventies with under gravel filtration...
impur
The ceramic circles will just clog up with detritus and become a nutrient sink. Filter floss will do fine just remember to clean it often.
