andy
Does anyone have a link to a calculator for SG changes? I want to increase my SG, but I want to do it in a controlled, predictable manner (no "just add 50ppt water until you get where you want to be" kind'a stuff). I'm looking for something similar to http://reef.diesyst.com/ but for SG. If only I kept my Chem 101 notes (laugh)
tidalsculpin
The last link appears to be what you are looking for. The others might help too. http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2002/1/chemistry/view?searchterm=specific%20gravity http://www.saltyzoo.com/SaltyCalcs/EvapSalinityCalc.php http://www.saltyzoo.com/SaltyCalcs/SalinityAdjust.php
DChemist
Let me know if those links work for you- if not give me a PM with what you're trying to do exactly (starting gravity, finish gravity, starting volume of saltwater, finish volume of saltwater, etc) I could help you calculate it. andy
Thanks! I'll explore those links and see how it goes :-)
fly guy
I think the gentlest and safest way to do it is to simply top off with ASW instead of freshwater until you are where you want to be.
andy
Yeah, I agree fly_guy, but my ATO almost croaked when I tried to run ASW through it and manual top-offs with normal salinity would take forever...
andy
Tidalsculpin, that last link is perfect. Thanks!
DChemist
There were three links, save us some time and tell which one was best for you...
andy
Ummm, the last one? ;-) http://www.saltyzoo.com/SaltyCalcs/SalinityAdjust.php
tidalsculpin
I included the other two just because I thought they were pretty informative. They don't have calculators though. DChemist: Are you actually a chemist? If so, what is the equation they might have used in that calculator? I'm curious.
DChemist
DChemist: Are you actually a chemist? If so, what is the equation they might have used in that calculator? I'm curious. Here are my credentials- I have an associates degree in Chemistry Technology from Clark Community College that allowed me to work as a chemistry technician (at a Chlor-Alkali plant in Portland) while I finished College at the University of Portland. I graduated with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry. I worked as a QC chemist for a year before I worked as a formulations chemist for the next eight years. Since 2000, I progressively became more involved in IT, which I'm now doing full time for a large chemical distributor. I haven't followed the links yet so I'm not sure what equations the're using- but I've built a similar tool used in adjusting heat transfer solutions (glycol in water). Just offering to help if help was needed.
