LC Scott
Ok I have a question. I have three computer fans hooked up to a 12v 500mA power supply. The fans are 12v .16A Am I going to be able to run that without being worried about it?
Napzard
Your power supply 12v x 0.5A = 6 watts Your fans 3(12v x 0.16A) = 5.76 watts You ought to be fine.
LC Scott
Thanks Napzard. I was fairly certain that it was ok. I just like to be sure.
C0lin
How quiet are those fans? The ones that came with my tank sound like they have sand for bearings.
LC Scott
Try this. http://s24.photobucket.com/albums/c15/fritoy911/Fish/?action=view¤t=SDC11859.mp4
C0lin
"sounds" good to me. Where did you get all the gear?
LC Scott
The fans came from Fri's as a for pack for $10 maybe and the 12v power supply I got at Value Village for $1.99.
C0lin
Thanks man. I have the power supply, so I'm definitely going to look for the fans. I should be able to just splice them in, right?
Rick
There are a lot of different options available using PC fans. Some are really quiet but may not move a lot of air, some are loud and move huge amounts of air, some have ball bearings and are quieter and last longer while some don't and are louder and will last less time. You can get small ones that are only a couple of inches across and you can get big ones that are about 8" across. There are also 3 speed fans with the option to change the speeds throughout the year. WHen shopping for one look for the highest CFM (cubic feet minute) and the lowest db (noise decibals). FWIW, I have a huge one that I took out of an old gaming system that is a 3 speed fan. I run it at medium speed most of the year and turn it up to high speed in the heat of the summer. I just use an old 12v charger I had laying around to power it. Old laptop bricks work also however they are a bit overkill if you can find a charger that is smaller.
