Hog Head
Do you use eggcrate under your sandbed and live rock? Why do you use it?
CA2OR
No I don't, but I do put my base LR on the bare glass before I add my sand. Most use it, from what I believe, to provide stability to their rocks and prevent collapse.....I could be wrong.
Hog Head
My lfs recommended it for my new tank.
CA2OR
did they give you a reason?
Hog Head
Not really. I thought maybe it was to help distribute the weight of the rock and protect the bottom? Could it interfere with burrowers?
CA2OR
I could see that distribution of weight would be good too. I imagine my wrasse wouldn't be to happy should he burrow right into some egg crate...can't feel good.

I didn't know that wrasses burrowed. Mine never did.
CA2OR
I have a Melanarus and it burrows about half an hour after the MH turns off.
gradth
I did on both my tanks. Mostly to keep the rock off the glass.
Saltfinsax
I put down some plexyglass to help with pinpoints on the bottem, then put my sand in. All or most my rocks lean against the back glass though.
markdadof2
I didn't use eggcrate in my cube, but used a type of board...and of course the name slips me now. I have it there so if I do have any rocks that fall they will not crack the glass. Wouldn't it be a bummer to have a rock slide and crack the bottom of the tank? So far my pistol and goby don't seem to mind the board under there....they are making caves like mad.
Hog Head
As long as my pistols and others don't mind it I guess I will keep it. So far I plan on only having about a 1" sand bed.
