ThePremiumAquarium
It is a montipora sp. I have only seen it here in the NW and havn't ever been able to find a solid name. It looks closest to a Montipora spongodes or Montipora confusa. Anyone know what this is?
TAD
I have a name for it. I call it montipora t.u.r.d I will say it may be my favorite piece in my tank though.
Krux
my guess would be monasteriata also similar to setosa, but those are hard to get accidentally

JeffP
It almost has some gree and purple tints to it. I am hoping they come through a bit stronger. Might be a Spongodes then. Here's one that I had - the new growth I think starts out purple then fades to green. i found the color was better with lower light.
coralreefaquarist
when it was under t5s the base was neon green and the polyps were bright purple. when i went to halides it browned out then kinda started to come back.it was brown for like 3 months under the t5s then decided to change oneweek . hang on to it for a bit and see what happens. TAD
So you think I should drop it down lower in the tank? I wont get rid of it, I do actually like it quite a bit.
coralreefaquarist
tough to say. when i had t5s and it colored its when i moved it prob 3 inches from the surfave and thats was under 312 watts of t5. so i dunno i forgot how bright the light you have is mabey try it high first. TAD
I have it pretty close to a 150 halide.
ThePremiumAquarium
Tad, I have the same morph I think. I will be keeping mine in the middle of the tank at first. Mine has the greenish color showing up now. The polyps are a sort of brown but I have seen them turn to purple in past pieces that I have had. Also the body gets much more flourcent green tints over time as mentioned above. Garrett
Michael7979
I'm thinking M. Spongdes. Greenish base with brownish polyps?
JeffP
I have it pretty close to a 150 halide. that's what i was doing too - try moving it to the bottom 1/3 of the tank and see what happens after a couple of weeks.

Krux
spongodes has recessed coralites, that piece has raised nodules, totally different structure... unless it is going to grow out and change drastically, there is no reasonable way that is an m. spongodes those are spongodes. trying to identify species simply by color is only useful for zoas
JeffP
Krux - those are some sweet spongodes!
