spilo
Well not preparing for a Power outage might have finally screwed me... How long can it go without power before stuff starts dieing.. I'm not home so manual stirring and all that is out of the question
Bombertech
First prority is temperature. If the temperature is okay and the light is off you should have 8-12 hours.
Bombertech
I've shut my tanks down for 6hrs with no flow but the lights have to be out (including direct sunlight). this will stop the corals from photosynthesizing and poisoning themselves from excess oxygen (as I understand it, anyone feel free to correct me if there is more to it). JManrow
Your tank should be fine up to about 24 hours or so without power or aeration. Any longer, you will need to have some kind of backup. Short of borrowing/renting a portable generator, buying a battery powered air pump will help. You can buy them at Sporting Supply Stores. I have done this 48 hours in the past with no losses. I have a 2000w power inverter that I can hook up to my Jeep now, but there are inexpensive ones that could run a pump and heater. Possibly rig one up to a car battery. There are also computer back up units. I have not used these, but I hear they are helpful. Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) Things will start stressing before 24 hrs., but usually no losses until after that. For outage during very cold days, I have covered the tank with blankets.
