Having a tank in class is a great learning tool

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I just want to encourage any teacher to bring a class into the classroom. I'm currently student teaching and brought in my 12g nano tank for several weeks for my saltwater reef unit. The tank was an amazing "hook" for my students and engagement was at an all time high. Kids and teachers would come from other classrooms just to check it out. It's a great learning opportunity for all. Plus, you can really blow them away if you put a doc cam in front of the tank and project it 6 feet wide. Hopefully I can have my own class so I can participate in the TFT program.

Sorry the pics are not that good. I only had my iphone with me.

Thanks,

Ryan in Salem

+1 Ryan, thanks for sharing. If you know any teachers in Salem intersted we can hook them up. When I was setting up the tank at the Pioneer school the adminiostrator's daughter was so interested and asked a lot of questions. Starting them young like that is a great way to teach them respect for the ocean and to understand that coral reefs are live creatures that are precious.

Great news! I just landed a teaching position. Mr. S are you heading up the TFT program? I was talking with Garrett and he thought you might be heading up TFT. Anyway, I submitted my app to the email listed on the form.
