20" 250W MH too much for open top Biocube 29 or 40 breeder?

Looking at a used Aquamedic 250w HQI MH Pendant that I'd use on a soon to be frag tank which might be a Biocube 29 or a 40 gal breeder or something in between. Would this fixture be too much for those tank sizes? Would it give enough coverage for a 40 gal breeder (36" wide)? My gut says it's an awful lot of light for these tanks (heat issues and energy costs). I currently don't keep any SPS but I have seen a few that caught my eye that I might take a crack at but it would be mostly softies and LPS in the tank.

I have a 250w over a 29gal, for what it's worth. Corals grow well and there's still plenty of space for lower light corals. Temp does tend to get high in the summer, but should be fine if you have air conditioning.

But then I also post to complain about rampant algae growth, so YMMV
