racefan
I have a baby sailfin tang.My wife called me this afternoon & said it's pretty much just laying on the bottom not moving. When I got home I netted it & put it in a pail of tank water & tried to give it a little food(wont eat) it's starting to swim on it's side & I'm afarid I'm gonna lose it. What do I do?
Rick
Are you aerating the water? If you have a small air pump then use an air stone and aerate the water to get more oxygen to it. To try to get it to eat soak the food in garlic. (Garlic helps trigger a feeding response)
coralreefer
Not good...how long have you had it? Stop handling it and turn lights off to reduce stress... It probably won't eat under these circumstances... Wishing you the best... DrMerle
racefan
Rick, I aerated the water & took it out of the bucket & held it near the oxy bubbles for 15 seconds or so. It really seemed to perk up, kinda like " wow that dose of oxygen was what I needed" then it started to swim around looking somewhat ok.It swam around for about 2 or 3 minutes then I lost sight of it. I cannot see it anywhere(scratch) so at this point I'm just aerating the water & keeping my fingers crossed hoping it's just getting strength back. coralreefer, One week yesterday.Lights are off, fingers are crossed. Rick
I would leave it alone now and hope for the best.
CA2OR
sounds like air is the trick. I had this happen before, I sat up all night holding one of my fish directly in front of my return...crazy thing....it worked...had that fish for 2 years after that before it died. racefan
Update: I did not see it at 3:30 am when I got up to go to work & when I got home I pretty much tore the aquascape apart & it's nowhere to be found. I'm wondering could it have died during the night & my nassurius snails(4 of them) have eaten it that quick? (it was about 11/2" long)
coralreefer
Snails would not have "devoured" it...Look in the overflow...around the floor...has to be somewhere, probably wedged in between rocks somewhere... DrMerle
Rick
I agree, snails would leave it alone until it was dissolving. Crabs and shrimp would eat it though.

finch6013
a fish that small the crabs could have eaten. they cleaned out a dead maxima of mine over night once
Rick
I have an Emerald Crab & a Fire Shrimp. Both could potentially eat the fish if it was either dying or dead.
Cannedmulder
I had the same thing happen and I found mine stuck to my power head!! Also a sailfin! Just about a week ago! After that there was no helping him.
Rick
It would be interesting to compile a list of all of the tangs recently purchased that were lost within a few weeks of purchase. I'm guessing most of them can probably be tracked back to a single supplier. (There was a thread awhile back where 2 or 3 people lost tangs right around the same time shortly after purchasing them)
