Hello! Just recently returned to saltwater with a 60 gallon display tank and (my first!) sump. Been enamored by reef tanks for more than 30 years, but it's taken a while to get there!ย  Kept a few saltwater tanks as a kid with my father.ย  Fun to see the changes and excited to keep building.

  3. I got a solid pink one, pink one with metallic polyp, and a green polyp one, though I'm really far away from u, Im in Gig Harbor, WA. But I got them from LFS near portland, the two pink ones I got from Upscale Aquatics. and the green polyp one I got from All Things Aquariums. They might still have some.

Where did you pick it up? It looks nice! I really enjoy blastos, but I cant seem to dissuade the hermits from treating them like a feeding bowl.

I picked him up at my LFS near Bellevue, WA, Saltwater City I think is the name?

  5. Just picked up this guy a day ago and I honestly, cant get over how nice he looks! White rimmed and bright orange under body! I didn't even know blasto comes in this color! I think I found a new coral species to get obsessed over.

Anyone got a cool/unique ones to show off?

    Feedback on phytoplankton:ย

    1. Shelf life of less than three months

    2. Falls out of suspension. Becomes less motile but still viable for feeding.ย

    3. Strong sulfur smell develops when certain strains are added.ย

    ย

    ย

    Solution

    1. The primary issue with putting multiple species of phytoplankton into a single container would be falling out of suspension->species die->bottle crashes via bacteria

To remedy this I have begun adding trace amounts of sodium alginate and citric acid to all phytoplankton blends to aid in suspension, shelf life, and prevent bacterial growth.ย

    2. I have narrowed down Rhodomonas salinas and Thalassiosira weissflogii to fall out of suspension the fastest. I am considering omitting them from the blend rotation. Them falling out of suspension is the a cause for bottle crash. More trials to be done.

    - Any PNSB product will have sodium alginate added to maintain stronger suspension.ย

(Picture: I will begin to have sea purslane propogated in full strength saltwater available soon. Grown with PNSB)

Why do you need to grow the sea puslane with PNSB? sorry a bit out of the loop lol, other than that super cool!

  7. Found a really cool/weird thing I wanted to share, when I got this big green plate coral he was a attached to a strange nub in the center. Didn't think much about it but it broke off a few months ago and I just left it in the tank. A week later a new plate coral grew from the nub, a couple of month after that it popped off and I assumed it was done. But a few weeks later another new plate coral started growing from the stub, this time red not like the other two. I popped it off a few days ago and a new one is already growing again! U can see the tiny little tentacles.

The higher dose could eventually cause dinoflagellates, but it will not 'cause BJD.' I have not dealt with this disease in torches, but in Goniopora. In Goniopora I was only able to stop it in the tank if I combined in-tank doses with 4-6 hour baths in concentrated cipro or Oxolinic Acid. I repeated the baths for the entire time that I was treating the tank. (High concentration for dip/bath was 1/2 of 500 mg cipro pill per gallon of tank water, and for Oxolinic Acid 2 g of OA per gallon of tank water.)

    Good luck!

Hey I wanted to thank you, I did the bath as u said and it totally worked great! One of the torch last week started getting BJD around the rim, I did a bath everyday for 6 hours with the concentrated cirpo and the BJD totally stopped. 6 days later and he is starting to open up again.

  10. I think this hobby is the biggest contributor to my anxiety ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…. I feel ya, I think the biggest thing that is really different in this hobby is that when u buy stuff, there is no guarantee you will get to keep it for long. If u buy a 500 bucks RC car it be there and most likely work fine next year. But a 500 bucks coral? Look at it the wrong way and its mush. But for some reason most of us just cant get enough of the psychological abuse. Maybe this says something about our personality ๐Ÿคฃ

  11. I HAD THIS EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME LAST WEEK!!! Chemiclean made my skimmer go crazy dumped at least 20 gallon right onto the floor, luckily my ATO has peristaltic pump on it so its didnt dump too much water.

  12. This is were they are being kept now they use to be in the main display, but these are essentially all thats left of my euphyllia colonies :(, mostly, pairs.

I did loss 2 in this tank as well a hammer and a dragon soul torch.
