  1. Starting to do some spring cleaning and I've got this Dehumidifier I'd like to get rid of. Its 1-year-old but was only used for one job for a week. The unit is a beast and can seriously suck a lot of water from the air, it also has an automatic timer and can be plumbed directly into a drain pipe. Figured someone on here with may have a use for it in a fish room. Make me an offer, would consider cash, livestock or a hybrid of the two.

    Hey folks!

If anyone needs formerly live rock to clean, cure and incorporate into your systems and you're planning on coming to HMSC in just a few weeks(!) , bring totes, buckets, clothes baskets and any other storage bins and load up while you're here. I have 200-300 pounds to liquidate, as, sorry to report, those tropical marine exhibits and holding systems have been taken down over the last several months due to budgetary/coverage considerations. As we all know, coral systems need a lot of extra time and money to maintain properly (especially if they are an exhibit) and these considerations ran right into the cold reality of budgetary constraints triggered by the recent remodel.

No one wanted these exhibits to go away, myself least of all, but no one wanted to allocate the funding to rebuild the systems or the infrastructure necessary for long-term success. So, here we are. I won't rule out the possibility for one or two coral exhibits sometime down the road (and I was really, really looking forward to building and maintaining an LPS system in my lab in the West Wing) but for now, the die is cast. If you've been jonesing for a bunch of live rock for an existing or upcoming system, please swing by on the 30th and load up!

    See you then!

    Sid

I could definitely use some rock for my existing system. Been wanting to add smaller rocks here and there and some rocks in the refugium could probably use 20-40 lbs depending on the pieces.

What fish do you have in your system that is a pair or more?

In the tank I have 2 yellow tangs, 4 carbarryi anthias (all female), 1 lawnmower blenny, 2 leopard wrasse (female), yellow tale damsel. Its a new tank and all the fish are new so maybe one was shipped pregnant and I didnt notice.

  4. Update-

Decided to turn some rocks over today in the sump to see if either of the fry survived. To my surprise one has, and it seems to be thriving as he is now around 1 inch. Does anyone have any idea what he is? Based on the eye position and overall body profile I do not believe it is a blenny anymore.

How much was the controller?  I just installed an inkbird temp controller yesterday.

35 On Amazon / their website. There are cheaper CPU fan controllers made for computers, however, the first one I tried out didn't allow for temperatures below 100F.. but this one will go down to 32.

I used this brand a lot to cool down the heatsink, can be use for tank cooling also. Very quite, good bearing and comes in diff sizes at Fry's.

Good to know, thanks for the recommendation.

  6. As the weather is warming up, so is my tank! I ended up buying this "coolerguys" thermal CPU fan controller that will turn the fans on/off inside the stand/ cabinet depending on the temperature. Just wanted to do a quick shout out to anyone thinking about building some fans into you stand for ventilation and cooling, this little controller does a pretty good job!

I will be adding more fans in the future, for now, I just installed 3 fans that will blow across the top of the tank/lighting and keep the hood area cool. At peak hour my T-5's are on and the LED's are running in the 75% range. Before installing the fans inside wooden cabinet door was getting into the 90-degree range. After installing only three fans (Which are rated at 60cfm each) nothing inside the hood (except for the lights itself) get above 78~.

  7. You may have a full inbox or something I also can't seem to send PMs, feel free to send me one. Was wondering if you would be available tomorrow evening I'll be sort of heading that direction anyway and am considering making a detour to check out the nems.

  8. I've got a question regarding the rough timeline of the meeting, when will the gold torch group buy / raffle happen? Will they happen earlier or later in the meeting? I am trying to weigh the opportunity cost of showing up on time, versus a little later and more time up on Timberline.

That is pretty wild.  Wish I had some knowledge/experience to help you out but that is new to me so hopefully someone else will chime in.

Yeah , I am not really prepared for it. I will probably just release then into refugium, and take steps so they can escape the fuge. Theyll have unlimited amounts of pods and algae down there.

  10. Today I found my lawnmower blenny along with 2 fish fry in my filter sock. Although I am unsure what type of fry they are based on body shape and proximity I believe they are also blennies.

Not entirely sure how much effort I am willing to put in for these guys, what kind of food will they need?

Anyone have any experience in breeding lawnmower blennies, what kind of chance for survival do these guys have?

Ooo I want to see the anthias.  Alas, that devil-fish is long gone.  The parrot replaced her.  Yea these gorgonians have been pretty easy for me.  I'll have cuts to share soon enough I'm sure if you would like.

Ill make sure to post some livestock pictures soon. Definetly would be interested in a cut. GCE just posted some cool yellow, red, and organge finger gorgonians will probably scoop up one or two of those aswell.

  12. Ah okay good to know, Ive had a few lower end gorgonians do fine without spot feeding.

Livestock looks great, weve got simular tastes in fish, just bought a pair of lepord wrasse from CnC last weekend and almost bought the fairy wrasse next door. Also bought some Carberryi anthias a few weeks ago.

But that parrot is sick. Do you still have the Sailfin? Just curious because cant finf him in the pictures.

  13. Here is the 1-month update + tank build finish pictures since I just realized I never posted fully finished pictures of the stand/hood.

First order of business is the hood, lights were attached pretty simply, LED bar was attached using ROMEX staples, 1/2 pvc, and really long zip ties. PVC is used behind the light to allow airflow when fans turn on, heat dissipation is not a problem after testing for a few hours at 100%.

Although the tank is operational it is not done here is my to-do list going forward.
    #1: Install dosing reservoirs/dosing pump.
    #2: Install carbon reactor.
#3: Install simple overflow weir in the refugium.
#4: Install 3/8 Line going from refugium to frag/nursery tank, that will allow a small amount of flow moving through the area. Then install the light.
#5: Build some lids for the sump and the tank at the top to cut down on evaporation.

Yeah - not really sure as I had a couple factors overlapping but I think there was still adequate light originally but I kept losing cheato balls as they physically broke up then would disintegrate. Could have been completely unrelated but does great now without the extra flow. Just thought I would throw it out there as a possible complicating factor as it seems counter intuitive.

Possibly simular in my tank originally I had only my siphone line going into a filter sock, this ment when I restarted the pump there were minutes of high turbulence /flow when the bean and animal overflow sucked air. I have routed all 3 pipes into filter sock since then. I think the chaotic flow was a problen as it broke up the ball of chaeto over time.

Hey Brian - If I happen to make it home before heading to the meeting tomorrow I will try and bring you some.  Just not sure how the day will go.

Thanks for the offer Sean dont go out of your way but if you can I would definetly apreciate a piece.

Aww, that's too bad Brian.  I was hopeful for that light but fuge lighting has proven more difficult than anticipated for me as well.

If you're looking for something new, I've been having crazy good luck finally with an AI Prime.  Way overkill but it works really well.

Yeah, I was and still am hopeful. I intend to raise the light higher off the water this time and will aclimate the chaeto using a couple scrap pieces of screen door mesh. I set the fuge up and left town for a week not giving it anytime to acclimate and I may have had the timer on for too long aswell.

i can bring chaeto . let me know if you still need some

Thanks for the offer many, if you could bring a small piece incase Sean isnt able to bring some I would certainly appreciate it.
