  2. Hi Dave,

Looks like your project is coming along nicely.

    1.  Programming ease:  Agreed, but not too bad once you play with it a bit.  Let me know if you need any help.  There is an Excel spreadsheet on the website that can be helpful in visualizing the program as well.

    2.  LCD Backlight:  The latest version of the CR180P now has the feature to automatically turn off the LCD backlight after a short period of inactivity.  It might be possible to upgrade your unit with some parts that I have inbound.  I will have to check on that.

    3.  Eyelets:  Your application is a bit of a special case, but I like your idea of possibly using nutserts as it would give more options for hard mounting the light.  Perhaps design and offer some simple rails for mounting the light into canopies which comes up on occasion.  No worry's about voiding your warranty.  I generally draw the line at dropping the light into the tank.

When you get it fired up over the tank I'll be interested to hear what you think about it.

If anyone has any general product questions, feel free to ask away in the ReefCorner forum.

  4. We are pleased to announce that we have just introduced our new PAR38 CR19 Refugium Light for lighting refugiums and mangroves for only $79.

The light operates at a true 19W of measured power.

This light is ideally suited for growing aquatic plants including Chaeto and Caulerpa macroalgaes as is commonly used in reef tank refugiums. It is also well suited for illuminating mangroves and other above water plants. In addition, the lighting spectrum is suitable for invertebrates commonly found in these systems.

Plant photosynthesis utilizes light primarily in the red and blue spectrum. These lights utilize 460nm Blue LEDs to boost the blue spectrum and warm 4500K and daylight 6500K LEDs which have a high red output, but because they are white LEDs, they also provide broad light spectrum coverage. This broad lighting spectrum provides a more natural warm white look unlike lights which only use red LEDs or red and blue LEDs. Those lights are best suited for algae scrubber applications. For that application we offer 35W grow lights.

The lights have 90 degree optics over the LEDs. In practice, the 90 degree optical lenses provide an effective usable light spread of approximately 60 degrees. The chart below shows the approximate light spread and light intensities that can be expected at various illumination distances. This chart assumes a 6″ distance from the light to the water surface. The PAR measurements are taken directly under the light. The light intensity will decrease as you move towards the edges of the light cone.

    PAR38-Refugium-Chart.jpg

The picture below shows two CR19 Refugium lights over a 40g breeder tank setup as a refugium and being used to grow Chaeto macroalgae and caulerpa. The tank is 36″L x 18″W x 16″H. The water depth to the sand bed is 12″. T he lights are approximately 8″ above the water. There are also some misc corals such as Xenia in this tank which are also doing well under the lighting spectrum.

Price is only $79 with free shipping. We also have PAR light mounting accessories available. Go to website

  5. We are pleased to announce that we have just introduced our new PAR38 CR19 Reef Light for smaller reef tanks for only $79.

The light operates at a true 19W of measured power.

While we use full spectrum in our larger lights, for the PAR38 we use a combination of (1) 420nm Purple, (2) 440nm Deep Blue, (4) 460nm Blue and (5) 14000K Crisp white LEDs. This gives a good color spectrum while minimizing the color banding that can be a problem on PAR38 lights that try to do a full spectrum. PAR38 lights have too few LEDs available in the array to pull off full spectrum well in my opinion.

Here is a comparison of the color banding (fringing) between the CR19 Reef Light on the left and a full spectrum PAR38 light on the right with the light in the same position in both pictures.

    Color-Banding-Comparison.jpg

The picture below shows 2 of these lights temporarily mounted over a 65g tank that is 36" x 18" x 24" deep to show the basic light spread and penetration of the lights.

    PAR38-Reef-Lights-over-65g.jpg

Unfortunately lack of space in front of the tank prevents getting a straight on photo of the whole tank, but here is a picture at the bottom of the tank. The coral on the left is Cespitularia, so yes it is suppose to be that color.

    PAR38-Reef-Light-at-24-inch-water-depth.jpg

The chart below shows illumination distance vs light spread and light intensity in PAR measured directly under the light. As you move out towards the edges of the light cone, the intensity decreases as with any light.

  7. We have recently received some nice Acro colonies in from Australia and Fiji for anyone looking for larger high quality pieces. Also keep in mind that shipping is only $16 to Oregon and Washington and we spare no expense in our packaging to ensure that the coral arrives safely. Some of our nation wide customers that have ordered from both us and Diver's Den have told us that our product quality is better for the price point and our shipping is superior.

    Here are some examples.

Strawberry Shortcake - A. microclados (Australia) Showing great color

More on the website and of course we also carry small colonies, frags, LPS and some soft coral as well.

  8. Welcome to the forum! Nice looking coral you have there! 1000 bucks and 5% discount. That's a pretty good deal!(clap)(clap) Sounds like someone should do a group buy!(plotting)

Typically when a customer has ordered a few times from me and have reach $1000 in total on livestock, they get a discount code that gives them a permanent 5% off anything they ever order on the website again.

If there was some interest in a group buy of some sort with a local pickup, we could do better than 5%.

  9. Local Pickup

A couple of questions have come up about this, so I'll address them here.

On the website it shows a minimum order requirement of $99. That is due to the fact that I typically ship my corals and $99 is about my break-even point for the average shipment. If someone wants to do a local pickup you can ignore that minimum order requirement and just select free shipping in the cart. Please add a note in the comments section of the cart or send me an email if you want to do a pick-up.

This business is operated out of my home to keep my overhead and prices low, so I am fairly flexible on when someone might want to pick-up an order, but please confirm a time in advance to make sure I will be available. I am usually available most times between about 9am and 7pm during the week and many weekend days as well.

  10. Are those your lights growing the coral? Coral looks great!

Yeah, I have used the coral tanks for testing various LED combinations and run my lights over them. I did just convert one system to be a hybrid system and added Radium MH along with my LEDs to see what difference it made if any on one of the SPS tanks.

  11. We try very hard to portray the coral as they appear in person even if that means toning down the color in the photos. Over 75% of our business is repeat business and the only way to get repeat business is to meet or exceed what the customer expects to get.

Since about 90% of our coral ships to the east coast, we are also pretty good at shipping.

Here are a couple of better pictures of some of the coral that just came in.

  12. Do you have a store front?

We don't have a store front, but everything on our website is WYSIWYG. We try to be careful to accurately represent our coral with both our pictures and our descriptions to make the buying experience similar to shopping in your local store.

  13. Hi Everyone,

I’d like to introduce myself and my company. My name is Ken Hahn and I am the owner of ReefCorner. You can find our website at www.ReefCorner.com.

We are an internet retailer located in the Portland area (Tigard) and I figured it was time to get more involved with the local reef hobbyist community and become a sponsor of PNWMAS.

I have been in the Saltwater hobby for many years (from back before there were things called ‘Reef’ tanks) and until recently was the head of Engineering for a local high tech company. About a year and a half ago, I decided to make a major lifestyle change and started ReefCorner as my full time business.

Our main products are currently LED reef lights and live coral.

Our ReefCorner branded wide spectrum LED lights are available in 120W and 180W versions. The 120W lights illuminate about 2' of tank length each while the 180W version lights about 3' of tank length each. We are also just now introducing a new 108W light that is DC powered and more compact which will work well on smaller tanks for anyone with a hankering to start an SPS nano and of course multiple units can be used on larger tanks as well. Shipping is always free on our lights Besides our website, you can also find some of our lighting products on the shelf at Upscales and CBstropicals locally.

Here is a couple of picture of our latest 108W Light which has multiple mounting options.

    CR108P-On-Tank-Mount.jpg

Our other main product is live coral. We specialize mainly in stony coral and offer everything from frags up to full colonies including large show colonies. One of our specialties is working with 3 different importers to custom order in corals for customers looking for large or unusual colonies that are not usually carried in stores like large colonies of Strawberry shortcake.

Here is a picture of one of our LPS Tanks

Here is a picture of one of our SPS tanks.

Here are some Fiji and Australian Acropora that just arrived yesterday that shows some of the quality of the coral. These will be going up on the website soon.

    New-SPS-Arrivals.jpg

Here is an example of a large show colony that we currently have. It is a dark blue Acropora tenuis over 10" across.

For 'local' customers in Oregon and much of Washington we are offering discount shipping on livestock of only $16 and free shipping for orders $299 and up. We also value repeat business and customers that buy $1000 in livestock from us get a permanent 5% discount on anything that they ever buy from us again including lights, shipping and items already on sale.

If you have any questions or comments, please post them up.
