  1. I've had a few 500w titanium heaters and they all seem to die really quickly. My current heater is a Won-Bros, and it is only 4 months old and it died overnight. I've used Finnex heaters in the past with the same result. They are controlled with an Apex controller/temp probe, and plugged into the outlet with the 10amp relay and not the 5amp switch, though I've tried the 5amp outlets in the past. The odd thing is, the 300w backup heater I have in the sump in the basement has been going strong for about a year now. It does have it's own dedicated controller, whereas my main tank heater does not.

Does anyone else have this problem? Am I doing something wrong? This is really driving me nuts...I can't believe I need to replace my heater every 4 months.

  2. Maybe we can temporarily turn off posting images to conserve bandwidth? For people who don't notice this post..just a thought.

I'm also willing to toss in money towards an emergency fund for the interim if needed...

  3. either your eyes are getting used to the color' date=' [/quote']

Not likely. I compared some corals to a picture and the colors are definitely a bit lighter.

    your bulbs are old

My T-5s are definitely due for a replacement. The MH are only 3 months old or so..

    or your phosphates are high.

Nope. Undetectable with my Salifert kit. I tested everything before I posted, since I knew someone would bring it up. Neglected to post it though...All parameters normal.

So I think I'm going to cut my MH down to 8 hours and replace my T-5s.

Any place around here carry 48" T5 Actinic?

    Thanks for the response all!

  4. My corals seem to have decent growth but the colors are kinda blah...

I'm wondering if my lights may be on too long...I can't recall why I did this initially and after writing it down I think it may be extreme.

I have 2x250 MH 14500k bulbs and 4x54w Pure Actinic bulbs. My light also has a dimming function.

The actinic come on at 5:00am at 5% power and increase to 100% power at 7am. From 7am to 730am, it is 100% actinic. At 730am the Halides also kick in and stay on until 630pm. The Actinics stay at 100% from 630pm to 700pm. They then dim to 5% power at 9pm and then turn off.

Should I cut back on my MH? I'm not so worried about the actinic due to the dimming.

    So for easier reading:

    5:00am : Actinic 5%

    7:00am : Actinic 100%

    7:00am - 7:30am : Actinic Only

    7:30am : MH turn on

    7:30am - 6:30pm : MH + Actnic

    6:30pm : MH turn off

    6:30pm - 7:00pm : Actnic Only

    9:00pm - Actinic 5%

My bulbs are also due for replacement so...suggestions on that would be nice as well. I'm thinking of switching 2xActinic+ and 2xPure Actinic...and maybe a lower K rating on my MH?

    Lights are complicated...(nutty)

  5. Off the few hundred zoas I have fragged a little dab of glue does the trick everytime, and seems to be doing the trick here now-It does look as if a few are pissed or taking a turn for the worse, but I got frags from the same group as all ya-so for me to get "replacement" frags goes against my beliefs regarding GOC's

Thats just me, others may have other thoughts but thats the way the cookie crumbles-

    My vote is no replacements-

Toxic... any super glue (gel being best) works fine-I use the stuff from Home Depot-much less expsensive and the same results as when I bought the stuff the LFS sells for 10-15 a bottle (Sorry LFS)

Good luck everyone-I aint out yet, just handicapped

This is my first competition so I'm refraining from commenting on replacements since I have absolutely no background. Whatever the group, or Eric, or whomever decides is fine by me..

Regarding gluing though, I guess my problem is "pushing" the polyp onto the frag plug...it seems I would damage the polyp by trying to press it into the glue/frag plug. Or should I fill the gap with glue? Is there some sort of magic trick I'm missing? (scratch)

  6. Mine also have had 2 started to "unglue" I reglued them but they are not looking that happy.

Its all good though, I got enough going on-just wanted to throw that out there as I may not be participating.

No worries Eric its all good

Sadly, I lost a couple too.. I think I'm down to 3? I'm a little nervous about the front one as it seems "loose" but it's holding on this far..

They seem to be healthy though, I'll try and get pictures up tonight.

  7. anyone know what this is from? ;)

You're not really wearing that are you?

    Wearing what?

The man purse. You actually gonna wear that or are you just ****in' with me?

It's where I keep all my things. Get a lot of compliments on this. Plus it's not a purse, it's called a satchel. Indiana Jones wears one.

    The hangover.

    Here's one of my favorites:

"The cheese is old and moldy. Where is the bathroom?"

  8. Its so hard to be patient though(scary).....lol

I am curious if anyone has any opinions on the Reef Octopus Protien Skimmers? Or any Experience with them.....They seem to get fairly good reviews...

I have an older model and I'm quite pleased with mine. It does have a small issue of the air intake hose getting blocked by detritus from time to time, but that's an easy fix and I'm pretty sure it's not an issue with the newer models due to a larger intake hole.

You should be happy with it I think.

  9. I'm sending this from my blackberry so I don't know if it is going?? I'm on my way back from Montana now so my coverage is terrible' date=' anyway I'm willing to go 100 on this if someone wants to bid it up I just don't really want to beat myself again.[/quote']

Alright, I gotta head to the airport to drop off a friend so I'll take your challenge Mr rgrcrain. I'll go to $70...and hopefully your coverage truly is terrible (laugh)

  10. I'm only going to get one chance to post today so...$55 for the pair (even if I get outbid, we break $1000 and everyone wins!)

Also Kim any chance 545622-Fungia plate is a typo? I have 545722 and it's still unclaimed soo...figured I'd ask.

Good luck all, hopefully I can check back in tonight

  11. I would think if you could construct a tank, and stock it with mature livestock in a high-end new show home with your name on it you may be able to generate a following?

You may get a, "Dear, remember that tank at that house we were considering? Although we didn't buy that house I loved that aquarium. I picked up one of his cards. Maybe we should give him a call"?

Now that's a nifty idea as well..I'd imagine there may be a few home builder types looking to attract extra customers as well. This is something I'll have to consider further...thanks much!

I particularly enjoy how you elaborated on the conversation.

    Well done.

I doff my cap to you dear sir.

  12. In the spirit of the ocean :) there are so many lines that bust me up from this movie...

"Discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it San Diego, which of course in German means a Whale's Vagina."

    I LOVE LAMP!

    Anchorman is a great flick...
