  1. Well, I came back from the coast today. Spent a few days in Depoe Bay for the 4th. Checked my tank and things weren't looking right. Then I saw the pieces of my blood shrimp which I've had for several months. (R.I.P.) What was going on? I looked at the thermometer....92 degrees! I saw that one of my maxijets had stopped running. My heater didn't have its "ON" light on. I turned them both off by unplugging them. It was an All-Glass made by Hydor. I plugged it in again (out of the water) and I saw the light come on and start warming up. I threw away the heater anyway because I don't think I could trust it (it came with the tank from PETCO). The intake to my maxijet was gunked up which probably shut it down. I cleaned it off and it works fine as far as I can tell. The website says that the pump won't overheat if the rotor jams or anything like that. Still, I'm at a loss. I don't think any modern heater should fail in the ON position and the pump didn't feel warm when I pulled it out. Weird.

  2. Dsoz,

I'm still unclear on what you intend to do with the durso. The website shows that the standpipe is connected to the bottom of the fuge. Are you going to modify that design so that it comes out the side of your fuge instead of the bottom?

Also, I was also talking to another person today who suggested that I just use a very simple design. A pump from the main display to put water in the fuge. Then, have a glass person make a hole on the other side of the tank near the top. Put a bulkhead fitting at that hole and plumb it back to the main display. Does anyone have any comments on this? There would be no baffles/seperate compartments in the 10g. Also, would this make a lot of noise?

  3. The Durso standpipe looks like a good idea. But that would mean I would need to have my 10gallon fuge drilled through the bottom right? Is there an over the tank design that I could look at that wouldn't require drilling?

  4. Hello everyone,

I would like to get people's advice on this item I saw on eBay. It is a refugium kit to convert a standard 10 gallon tank. I happen to have a spare 10g, so I got interested.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/PRO-Refugium-kit-for-glass-aquarium-wet-dry-filter-sump_W0QQitemZ300120313779QQihZ020QQcategoryZ3212QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I would like to place a refugium over the main tank. But I've never set one up before and I have plumbing questions. Such as:

    1. Using the kit above, how does water get back to the main display. Naturally, I would prefer it to be gravity but I don't think that is going to be possible with that setup.

    2. If it is fed back to the main display using a pump, what kind of pump should I use?

    3. How do you balance the flow between the input and output if there are 2 pumps?

    4. If it isn't 2 pumps, and some sort of siphon is taking place...what happens if the pump fails or the siphon is interrupted?

    Thanks for any info!

  5. well i havnt done the mag 3 or 5.. i say that because' date=' on my wifes tank, its been like 3 weeks now with the cup all the way on the bottom, and it only has about half a cup of skimmate with a mj1200[/quote']

That's what was happening to me before I scrubbed the intake tube thoroughly. I wasn't getting much into the cup. Now, I'm back to my original frustration. I'm always having to dink with the cup height to get good skimmate. Sometimes, I have to empty the cup out everyday and it has light green water. Other times, after a day or two I notice no pull and I have to drop the cup height down just to get anything at all. I guess that would be my major complaint, I've never gotten a consistent pull and consistent skimmate quality.

  6. Well, the fish is still fairly blind. I'm target feeding now with a pipette and she gets her food. It just sux that she went from this beautiful fish that would swim in the middle of the tank to this hermit in a cave that only comes out to eat.

I think I experienced a domino effect by adding the little piece of live rock with zoas on it. My sea urchin died, all my xenia is gone, my galaxea has receded. I know, I know, I should've quarantined. But a little tank like mine, a quarantine tank wouldn't be much smaller than the display! Besides the rock was in the LFS display for awhile already.

  7. yup.. thats one thing i think everyone can agree on. they need cleaning often to work decently.

as for the pump, id go with a mag 3 or 5. the mj1200 just isnt enough. ive thought about hooking up the venturi line though, since i now have my old one in my wifes tank now.

Can you elaborate on why you thought the mj1200 wasn't enough? What difference did you see when you went up to the mag 3 from the maxijet?

  8. I notice there are also some feather duster worms on that same rock. Will a fw dip makes those guys evacuate as well?

Will a fw dip of the rock cause die-off that I need to be concerned about? I mean will I be able to put the rock back into the tank right away?

  9. Um, I think I have one of these eunicid worms in my tank. It's light green and fairly small. It's really quick so I've never been able to take a picture of it. However, I have seen the telltale five tentacles with one tentacle coming right out of the forehead.

It's never preyed on anything in my tank, so I've left it alone. You guys think I should take it out? It's hiding out on a rock full of mushrooms so I'm not sure what method you guys would recommend.

  10. Hi Holly, thanks for your concern. I can't really tell from the angle of your picture. The eye problem is really noticeable only when I look at the fish, um, face to face. I can see both eyes are kinda swollen but only on the lower half of the eyeballs. The whites on the eyeballs also have taken on a strange metallic white color. The fish is definitely blind right now so I'm pretty upset about it.

I'm pretty sure it's my fault. I added a little live rock with pretty zoanthids on it not too long ago and tank parameters went out of whack. I have a 26 gallon so water is very sensitive. I've been doing lots of water changes and it's back to normal. Oh and that xenia patch I mentioned in the first post...looks pretty bad. All greyed out and limp. Should I scrape it off the rock? I've heard xenia secrete toxic chemicals when stressed.

  11. My purple firefish recently started acting weird. It has refused food for at least 3 days now and hides alot. The eye's look a little weird. The best way to describe it is that the eyes look a little swollen or pooching out on the bottom half of the eyeballs. I don't know what caused it. It has started wandering around the bottom of the aquarium tank and it has never done that before. It used to just swim in one spot in a stream created by the powerhead.

I do notice a small patch of Xenia looking a little sickly, I think my urchin ran over it. The other patches of Xenia look fine. The other animals are also acting completely fine. My last 20% water change was barely two weeks ago.

  12. Can anyone recommend an uninterruptible power supply? Preferably something compact, <$100 and will be able to support small loads (~10w)?

  13. The skimmer came with a maxi jet 1200. There are micro bubbles that are kinda annoying but I've learned to live with it.

When I first got the skimmer, it would pull quite a bit out and I had to constantly adjust cup height to tweak how wet/dry the skimmate foam was.

I'd say it has been at least two months now that the cup is completely bottomed out and I don't get much. I clean the cup/riser tube every 3-4 days (as I've been doing since day 1). There is still significant muck on the riser tube that collects between cleanings, it's just hard for me to believe that my system has gotten "clean" and not much is coming out. Actual dirty water collected in the cup is very little.

I'm willing to try a different pump if you guys think that will help.

  14. Hey guys,

Just wanted to tell someone that I saw an amazing (to me anyway) thing in my tank this morning.

My purple firefish was in its cave getting a cleaning from my shrimp! They've been in the tank for a few weeks now and I figured it wasn't gonna happen. I've read that this type of shrimp doesn't have very strong cleaning instincts and figured my firefish was way too small. I actually thought the firefish had died and was being eaten.

I wonder if my other fish, a false clown, will ever submit to a cleaning.

Anyway, thanks for listening. This hobby is great!

  15. Yay, my sunpod arrived today. The 24" 150w kind.

I'm getting a little ahead of myself, but where do you guys go to get replacement bulbs? Ebay? Another online retailer? Your lfs or electrical/lighting store?

I saw some really cheap no-name bulbs from Ebay (under 10 bux). But there obviously has to be a quality issue there.

Since I'm just starting out, I don't really trust any online shops yet.

    Any suggestions?
