Just make sure the water is above the opening of the U tube on both sides when you suck the air out. The air tubing always works great for me.

I agree with that, at first I bought from Liveaquaria and then tried some of the "aquacultured" stuff from Florida but what I'm most happy with is the big stuff I hand picked. They say PNWMAS will have time to introduce ourselves. Also says there will be used tanks and some equipment.

As far as running without one bulb I know my 8 bulb T5 runs in pairs and both are out if one isn't in quite right.
