defigart
Ok my continuous syphon overflow is rated for 1400 GPH, and my pump is rated for a bit more than that, but with head loss it is under 1400. Anyway, the overflow is REAL LOUD. Any ideas of how to quiet it?
andy
Can you dial it back? That's a lot of flow through the sump... What kind of noise? Flushing? Water rushing?
defigart
Andy, Right now its just to get everything set and going. I am working on builing a custom sump that will include this pump for my manifold, and a smaller one for my refugium. The noise is kind of like a sucking and gurgling. andy
If it is a periodic toilet-flush kind'a thing, you need a Durso-style overflow. RC's DIY forum has several threads on these guys; I like this one.
defigart
Unfortunately I can't drill this tank.
andy
You can still do something similar with an overflow box, along the lines of this
defigart
Great thanks. I have to let that simmer for a while, and see where it leads me.
reefhut
Slow down the flow that returns to the sump. Gate valve the return and will silence the thing for sure. The down side is keeping little snails out of the tube, so you may want to put one of those coarse foam wraps around the end of your J tube. biomekanic
re Durso style: I loved mine, and it was pretty easy to make re snails: My hate for the one that got into my overflow knew no bounds. It was hours of mucking about underneath the tank to find the thing in the tube. Let's just say my solution involved a pair of plyers and some very happy omnivores in my refugium. Lesson learned: Snail guards are like the speed of light: not just a good idea, it's the law.
