  1. I have 50G of water (maybe a bit more with the sump, but the tank itself is only a 40G (36x15x16). If I do decide to try the chromis, should I only get 4 or 5? Or is that too many? I read about them some more yesterday and some people think they need to be fed several times a day (like anthias) to keep them from turning on each other. How often do you feed your's?
  2. What about Lyretail Anthias? I read they like to hang out in groups, but can't find much info on them on the net in general.
  3. The cardinals mostly just hover in one place as far as I've seen and I was hoping for a more active fish or two. How active are the firefish (apart from wanting to jump out of the tank)?
  4. Price was a bit of a consideration, too! And activity level. So, royal grammas school and don't turn on each other?
  5. Thanks! It actually sounds like they prefer to be single. :( Some people's seem to be okay in small groups, but I'll have to rethink.
  6. Can you tell me where I can find that thread? So, Chromis are NOT schooling fish at all? Maybe I should just get two then?
  7. I'm adding a small school of chromis to my 40G (was thinking 4 or 6), but I keep seeing people recommend to get an uneven number. Is there a good reason or is it just a myth that gets passed on. What are your experiences?(scratch)
  8. Thanks! Does the mag-float have replaceable pads?
  9. Edit: For some reason the word SCRATCH gets turned into the *Scratch* icon each time the word is used! laugh Today my rainbow lifegard scratch removal kit arrived, and after the initial shock of seeing the horrible scratches it created before it got better, I am quite pleased with the result. I had tons of small scratches on the inside (not just on the bottom near the sand) and I was hoping to get some ideas how to avoid them in the future. The acrylic safe sponge I've been using is obviously not as safe as they advertise! Are there any recommended magnet cleaners that do not create scratches as long as you stay away from the sand? And I read that some people put some micromesh on their inside magnet to constantly buff out small scratches. I wonder if this is safe for the inhabitants. It sounds like a great idea! And in a few days, my aqua lifter pumps for an auto top-off should arrive. While researching, I came across a lot of mention that RO/DI top-off water should be aerated and buffered, while other places said this is not necessary. What's everybody's experience here?
  10. Did you say you were working on a DIY seaswirl, too?
  11. Hey, this looks great! How much $$ are in that little mod?
  12. Are we talking SPS here, or LPS/Softies, too?
  13. We moved a tank just a couple of miles in town two years ago, and ended up having a major outbreak of first slime, then hair algae, and the sand never looked as bright and clean as it did before. I'd start new to avoid problems right from the start and just keep a little of the sand as a starter culture. I did have good luck rinsing the sand for my 40G i got from Cormac *really* well with freshwater and using it with some LS added from my 20G.
  14. My fish recovered well from ich in a quarantine tank at 84F, with salinity dropped slowly to 1.009. Are your fish still eating? -Susanne
  15. It sure *looks* like a tiny cerith snail! I hope it makes it!
  16. Here are the pics of the two types of zoas I have enough of to make a frag. The pictures are not too great, but good enough, I hope. Colors are pretty close, but a little brighter in reality.
  17. Ah, okay! I have a couple of finger leathers in the 20H that want to take over the tank (anyone need some? ). But I've seen picture of leathers with green polyps, which I'd love to get some time!
  18. Thanks! I actually have a little digitata high up in my 20H that's been doing soso. Very slow growth, but it *is* growing. Color is just a tannish brown, but I suspect it's do to the lighting. I'll move that one into the 40G and see if it likes the lighting better in there, and if yes, I may try another. I can already tell that a 40G is way too small! DOH! -Susanne
  19. I wanted to take a look at your tank pictures, but all I get is: "Oops! My image for this link is no longer here." Is it just me and my computer settings? -Susanne
  20. I may already have that same candy cane, then. Give me a day or so, and I'll try to get pics of the zoas I have! And I'll get back to you on the frogspawn then two! Got to run off to work right now... -Susanne
  21. You think? Any specific ones that like pc lighting? -Susanne
  22. Very nice frogspawn! What color is your candy cane? Please pm me me with specifics (price etc. so I know if I can afford it! ). I might be able to trade a couple of different zoas (one orange, one with bright green eyes) and I always have xenia and red mushrooms, and a few small GSP frags, though I realize that most people aren't in need of those. -Susanne
  23. I'd sure take you up on that! And we are definitely looking forward to that green ric! Thanks for the suggestions! I'll have to do some studying, since my 20H is mostly softies, except a thriving capricornis, that's been doing amazingly well in that tank considering the lighting! BTW, if anyone knows where to get daisy polyps, please let me know! They seem to be rarer than chicken with teeth around here! And does anyone have a few small frags to sell of any of the above? I'm definitely interested! Colorful zoas would also be great! I bought a few small frags at Seans yesterday, and they seem happy in the tank so far. Opened up right away. Some day I'll have enough light for a few colored sticks! Maybe the LEDs will be affordable in a few decades or so! -Susanne
  24. My 40G w. 20G sump is finally ready for more than the cleaning crew and I am looking for some ideas of what corals to add over time. I'm trying to avoid Xenia, shrooms and GSP in this one, since they like to take over the whole tank and I've never had too much luck keeping them isolated to just one rock in my 20H I have several small zoanthids frags in it, the candy cane I got from Miles and the samll hammer frag that recently has problems (it's doing great again! ). Metal halides (or the new LED lights) are not in the picture in the near future and I'm wondering what else would be happy in this tank. Tank depth is 16 inches and there are no fish in the tank as of yet. I'm hoping to add a small school of chromis soon.
  25. I did try feeding it last night, but it wasn't interested then. -Susanne
