CA2OR Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 I have been unable to get these identified for over 2 years now. I have posted image after image on Reef Central and other sites to no avail. I have also taken these to over a dozen stores to only hear "I would love to get some of those, but no I don't know what they are." I am tired of referring to them as unknown polyps or unknown xenia. I know they are NOT Tinkerbell Xenia as I have some of that and they don't look like this, only in color. Quote
CA2OR Posted January 5, 2009 Author Posted January 5, 2009 These pictures are 3 months or so old and they have grown on to my back wall now. They do not grow by encrusting like GSP, and not individual stocks like Xenia. They almost have a branch that spreads then the polyps stand off of it. Quote
CA2OR Posted January 5, 2009 Author Posted January 5, 2009 They look like a cross between GSP and Xenia. Which is why I keep getting conflicting ID's or either a GSP variation or a Xenia variation Quote
fishmanmike01 Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 There is a GSP like coral that grows in a branching manner like you describe its called Green Briareum thats why i ask. Quote
CA2OR Posted January 5, 2009 Author Posted January 5, 2009 Does it look like these? They aren't green in the least. They are burgandy pure and through. I know that the "green" in GSP is pretty much just a name and they do come in color variations don't they? Quote
CA2OR Posted January 5, 2009 Author Posted January 5, 2009 I just looked up images of the Green Bairenium and they dont look like these. Maybe the pic's I looked at weren't right but they all looked like GSP. Had green tips and all. Quote
CA2OR Posted January 5, 2009 Author Posted January 5, 2009 One thing I noticed about the GSP's and on the images I just looked at they all have that white mouth. Mine have no mouth that I can see, like Xenia IMO Quote
pledosophy Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 Can you get a close up picture of the base. Also a closer pic of the polyp. Quote
CA2OR Posted January 5, 2009 Author Posted January 5, 2009 I will do that in the morning. My lights are already off and I am at work until 11 Quote
CA2OR Posted January 5, 2009 Author Posted January 5, 2009 no...definatly not clove's. I will try and post better image tomorrow. Quote
CA2OR Posted January 5, 2009 Author Posted January 5, 2009 This is almost identical to all the other times I tried to ID these. NO INSULT TO ANYONE. Just seems to be my luck. I will try and take close up's tomorrow and post. Then we try again. Quote
CA2OR Posted January 5, 2009 Author Posted January 5, 2009 You know what you are right. I have been wrong for dismissing Cloves, Xenia, and GSP. I have no idea. The reason I keep saying no is if it was GSP or Xenia you would think that at least 1 of the LFS's would have said that. Quote
MadReefer Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 Maybe you can find someone to check it at a DNA level. Quote
CA2OR Posted January 5, 2009 Author Posted January 5, 2009 lol.....something.....I have no idea but I am at a loss here. I was considering taking some out and making room for other things but with no ID I don't know what to do(scratch) Quote
undrtkr_00 Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 GSP does come in other colors. If you go to the next meeting, you'll see some red star polyps in Calvin's (kilmca) tank. Quote
impur Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 I'd say Anthelia sp. with 90% accuracy. Do i win something? :p Quote
pledosophy Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 Let's wait for the pic of the base before we start handing out prizes Miles. Quote
CA2OR Posted January 6, 2009 Author Posted January 6, 2009 Well that is a bummer...I forgot to charge my camera yesterdayDOH!so I have to take the pix tonight. I can tell you that it is not Anthelia. It doesn't have the feather fingers like the one in the pic. Quote
pledosophy Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 Don't feel to bad Miles the prize is a bag of detritus. Quote
