UV in your reef tank?

How many of you run a UV sterilizer in your reef tanks? I kept my Uv light when my Freshwater tank left today

I have read some people use them and some don't. What is the general consensus...helpful in the reef or not?

I run one in my tank but not sure if it does any good or not(scratch) I have noticed little to no dif. in the algea growth on the glass since it was installed. I know a few people who use them so will see what they have to say.

I too run a 57w on my 225gallon reef, but don't really know if it is helping or not. I figure all is going well, so i'll continue to run it.

I used a UV sterilization system in my 700 gallon pond. After a summer of hair algae, I sold it. I didn't work there, so I am not ready to spend the money on it for my reef until I heard better success stories.

i use a 36w on my 72g bowfront. again, i dont know if it helps or not, but i run it anyway. i can say i haven't had any problems with parasites for a very long time, but that could be attributed to a number of things. the water does seem to be a little more crystal clear when i am running it.

I always thought UV helps more against disease than algae.

I run uv 24/7 as a preventavie measure to bacteria, parasites and protozoa. I had a couple of ick outbreaks, and some unexplained rtn pre uv sterilizer, havn't had any issued since I installed it. I know that it can only help, not hinder. There are some sceptics who say that it will kill to much of your beneficial stuff, but nearly all of your beneficial stuff is not free floating, or found in the water cloumn. The few stuff that is beneficial that is found in the water column does not survive in the home reef tank anyways so that theory is out the window . If it did your tank clarity would be horrible, and your skimmer cup would runneth over haha. I say run one, it can only help things!!
