Calc Reactor Recommendation

Recommended Posts

Ive been having issue keeping up to date with dosing two parts and its becoming really expensive now. Im going through more than 3 bottles of Alk and Calc an month now.

Anyone got a good Calc reactor recommendation that is easy to set up? Is this even the right move? Also anyone got one for sale?

Thanks!

Avast marine sells a diy kit where it has everything and you put it together..or buy the ones they put together..I just plumbed mine to my ATO but it's pretty easy to run a doser hose through the ph Probe port or just drill another hole in the top to customize it.

Do you have a budget range if purchasing a new one?

idk. Im hoping that under 400? but that seems unlikely at this point.

In that price range you may want to target a used Reef Octopus unit.  I don’t know how easy they are to find new.

I converted over to the saturation style reactors with my Dastaco, but they are very expensive and the company has been having issues recently.  I will at some point upgrade to the Deltec TT 1500 model, but that is a hard price for me to justify since the Dastaco works great.

I see used Dastaco units from time to time in the 600-700 range.  If that doesn’t scare you, maybe keep dosing until you see one pop up.

Dastaco

Deltec

Reef Octopus

Assuming you have no leaks, really any used unit will work, investigate a Carbondoser regulator as a QOL upgrade if you don’t go with a saturation based system.  They are also occasionally available used.

Hope that helps.

I run a reef octopus, pushed by a basic pump (nothing fancy), with a pH probe inside the reactor chamber - and my Apex controls the CO2 levels, based on my target chamber pH.  (turns CO2 solenoid on/off).  could do the same with a fancy bubble counter solenoid too.

In my case, I use my trident to do an overall override of CO2 for the reactor.  If Alk > target (8.5), just Turn OFF the CO2.  If Alk<target, then control CO2 to the chamber target pH.   Easy.
