JBJ 28G BioCube...Pulling Air :(

Hi everyone! Just wondering if anyone has the JBJ and has come across the air-in-the-line problem :( I've upgraded the Accela's to MaxiJet 1200's and I can't keep enough water in the back setup, it just pulls air, though oddly enough it's just the right jet. The left jet is the same thing, yet it never pulls air, even when the secondary one does. I've replaced the hoses with solid lines, it just pulls so much water on the right side that it'll deplete the entire right-side back area faster than the left, it's boggling my mind. I'm using an InTank basket as well, but it does it even without it in there and just naturally draining.

My main issue is I *can* just fill it up with more water and stop it from happening...but I'm using a Kraken Custom lid and it pushes the water level to touching that, if not bubbling out of the center. Is this an issue of me needing to find a weaker pump? or do I basically just have to get over it? (nothing else is in the chamber to stop water flow to both sides, so it's really just a weird issue). Thank you in advance!

Sounds like the right pump is pushing a lot more water than the left one. Things to check:

Are they oriented exactly the same?  If the inlet is stuck against a wall it would cause limited flow. Also check to see if there’s something physically stuck in the inlet (algae, snail, etc)

As far as water level is concerned, adding water should technically only change the level in the rear chamber where the pumps are.  If the display area is getting too high, then your overflow can’t handle the flow rate of the pumps. Make sure your overflow “teeth” are completely clear/clean.  If they are, you’ll have to either find a way to restrict the pump flow (defeats the purpose of upgrading the flow), or cut out some of the “teeth” on the overflow.

Are you using their wavemaker so only one pump operates at a time? I had 2 of these tanks as a quarantine tanks. If you try to run both powerheads at the same time your issue happens. The only other thing I can think of other than what was mentioned is any bio media (outside of the media basket) creating a flow blockage.

If your tank is on the standard JBJ stand these are easy to move away from the wall so you can view it as it’s happening. Just drain 15 gallons and it’ll slide on most any surface. Then fill it and watch. I know it sounds risky but I’ve moved mine around without issue. That’s the easiest way to identify the cause if you have tried everything else.
