Saltfishlover
I was wondering if over skimming would reduce possible nitrates and cause dinos?
TheClark
It's definitely possible to over-export nutrients. A phosphate and nitrate test would be a good place to look to answer that question. Opinions vary on proper levels, I have been shooting for 0.15 phosphate and 5 ppm nitrate myself, but just experimenting. Dinos are a whole huge topic (and pain) with lots of experienced folks on here that will likely chime in. Good luck!
Higher Thinking
I agree that you can definitely over export nutrients. What I'm not sure of, is whether you could skim your way down to zero. Skimming works due to the presence of dissolved organic compounds. I feel like if you had near zero, the skimmer wouldn't operate efficiently enough to reduce it to zero. That's totally just a guess though and you may be able to Google something that confirms or overrides that. I have heard of people running their skimmers on timers because it will bring nutrient levels lower than they want. Are you testing at all for nitrates?
