Trailermann
Would you say that chillers are standard equipment for setups that primarily use metal halide lights? Even with home A/C?
Emerald525
I would say so. Those put out a lot of heat! In the winter probably not a huge deal but in the summer even in the basement where it is the coldest my tank got too hot and lost a lot of my sps in the past. dlp6899
I have used Halides for years without Chiller, but I keep my AC on all summer. I don't know which would be cheaper when it comes to your electric bill though.
albertareef
I managed to run a 120 with two 400 watt MHs in a canopy without a chiller... BUT, I had a lot of fans running in the canopy and sump to accomplish that. Sounded like a jet runway in my dinning room. Tank still got to the upper end of what I considered safe and, as you can imagine, evaporated a lot of water. It is probably more feasible if you use pendant style lighting a reasonable distance from the water surface as the heat will not be as contained. You can also reduce the heat load by using external return pumps etc. if you want to capture some additional headroom.
