Jack-the-reefer
The tide pool is finally wet! I had to do some last minute tinkering with the overflow yesterday to get the water level right. But I think it's actually going to work!
albertareef
I remember reading about this a while back... looking forward to seeing it in action! What all do you plan to keep in it?
PowderBlue
Ok that looks cool but please explain, haha, planning on keeping anything in it?Sent from my SM-G928V using Tapatalk

Looking forward to seeing what you do with this, Jack!

Jack-the-reefer
Thanks everybody! It's been forever in the making. We bought a house as I was gathering pieces for this, so it got put in the garage for a while. It's going to be an Oregon coast tide pool tank. I'll go out and collect everything for it myself. I'm going to keep it pretty simple though. Mainly different anemones, and some interesting crustaceans if I find any.
spectra
Are you going to keep the water cold or ?
Jack-the-reefer
Yes. I have a chiller. I'll keep the temp at 57.
chewie
That's awesome! Post pics of the setup underneath.
Jack-the-reefer
You can't see much from the picture. But the return tube is hidden inside the overflow. I'm using the cooler as a sump because it has to be something that won't get condensation from the cold water. The chiller isn't hooked up yet. TheClark
So cool! Cannot wait to see it fill with life.
chewie
very cool!
albertareef
Very cool idea. I was wondering how you were going to compensate for the condensation with the chilled water. I recall seeing some local chilled water display tanks which had super thick acrylic in order to avoid that problem.
Jack-the-reefer
I've run into a problem. Hopefully someone smarter than me can help me figure it out. Everything runs great, the only problem is that it's really loud. The drain is just a straight shot down to the sump. I made a u shape at the bottom of the drain, but it's still way too loud. Any ideas?
spectra
You need some sort of valve to control the flow. Having just a open pipe the water will spill and be noisy. Its kind of like a durso and they are noisy to me. Hate to say it but you need to have 2 drains one with a valve and the other as an emergency just in case the first is plugged.
Jack-the-reefer
Has anyone tried in of those Maggie muffler things?
Jack-the-reefer
Still not perfect, but this is a huge improvement. It's just an oversized cap over the drain tube. There are spacers inside so water can still flow up and under the cap.
Jack-the-reefer
So it turns out my chiller doesn't chill. Does anyone know how to work on them. This is all going back into the garage is I can't figure it out. I can't afford a new chiller right now.
Flashy Fins
Sorry to hear! I would start a new thread about the chiller, to up the chances someone who knows how to work on them will see it.
Fearnofish541
What are the laws for collecting from the tide pools? I have been wanting to setup a cold water tank with stuff I collect from the coast but I've never been sure about what laws and regulations there are for doing this. For example I know most sport fish you can't catch and then take home to throw in your pond without risking a huge fine. I found a website that was talking about it only be restricted in protected areas but I haven't found any actual laws or regulations though. Try this http://www.dfw.state.or.us/mrp/shellfish/regulations.asp I know you need a license and also just make sure you are in an area that is open to harvesting.
Fearnofish541
I did not think it would be in shellfish regulations but figured you guys would know.
Fearnofish541
Also think it's awesome idea to use that planter to make a little tide pool. I hope you can get your chiller fixed I want to see this running
Jack-the-reefer
I still haven't had time to tear into the chiller. But I figured out the noise problem at least. I driller s second home in the stand pipe and added second tube. This way I should be able to have the drain on full siphon. I might actually just run the whole thing on a big canister filter. Then I could just run the return through the chiller (assuming I eventually get one that works).
TheClark
Smart! The canister filter sounds smart also. No worries about sump leaks etc...
