anybody ever use the oceans water

well im going to be moving to maui when i graduate school and i plan on setting up a 500-1000 gallon tank in my garage. has any one ever takin the water from the ocean? or herd of someone doing it. and is it legal to use the oceans sand as well. i plan on making it a fish only tank.... and im sure im going to have to do a large water change atleast every week?

I don't know of the legality's but many of my stores in California are using NSW in their systems. The only problem many of them run into is algae blooms and the constant need to supplement. If you will be living near a university or public aquarium you might check with them for NSW sales.

I have read a thread from a guy who lives in the Bahama's. He collects NSW and said to be careful to go off shore a ways and not to collect right after rain. Makes sence.

 

I have heard Hawaii is really strict on what you can and can not do so be sure to look in to the leagal side of things (nutty)

yeah i read one about a guy in dubai with a 19000 gallon connected to a 50000g fish farm and a3500g sump plumbed directly of their dock into i believe red sea if im not mistaken, was nothing but a murky mess, he collected everything himself though only lps, and monster groupers very cool thread though

I checked on that thread a few times and the tank never seemed to get better.

 

I would be careful of pollution's/organics in the sea water. Collecting it off shore a bit seems like a good idea.
