pledosophy
Is anyone using these? Is there a trick to making them quiet? Mine are very loud. I can hear them all across the house. I have 2 on my 120g with a Eheim 1260 for a return, thanks.
souperman
I have the same setup on my 90g, but just a single overflow. It has been very quiet, the only noise I can hear is the water squirting from the siphon break hole in the return line. I could probably get rid of that by raising the water level in the overflow above that hole but it doesn't bother me much. The pump I'm using is rated at 1100 GPH, I estimate I'm getting 650-750 with head pressure. Maybe you're not pushing enough water thru it? That Ehiem is only rated at 640GPH? That's not much split between two overflows rated at around 750GPH each.
Mohaynow
put a cover over your overflows. Paint it or tint it black to also keep light and algea out.

stephanie
I can't see mine, so I never thought about algae growing in there!
h2odvl
make sure the vent hole in the top is clear/open
pledosophy
the hole is completely clear and as you can see from the picture, no algae is growing on it. the tank is newly setup. It came with these as opposed to the duroso's I am used to.
Smann
I think i would replace it with a standard Durso, The different size pipe in the picture look a little odd to me. Does it have the air valve on the top?
pledosophy
the different size pipe is because it slides up and down at your will. Kinda weird never seen anything like that before. There is an airhole at the top, but not the "valve" with the adjustable wheel on it. I'll put one on and see if it helps. To late to go to HD for Duroso parts now anyways. reefnjunkie
My Marineland and my old 75 gallon used those, on the 75 I drilled the hole bigger and added air tubing in the hole and adjusted the tubing until it was quiet. On the 150 (marineland) I to had the noise from the siphon break since water was spraying out sine my retrun pump was more that it was designed for I suppose, so I glued the siphon breaks shut-that helped but not the cure. I drilled the hole bigger which helped but in the end I removed the entire elbow and have it just a straight tube draining, I have a ball valve on the return side in the sump which is slighly closed to reuduce the noise. It took quite a bit of messing with but in the end it has been quiet. Strage thing is the 150 has 2 drains like that, 1 is left "stock" the other has the elbow removed, I am sure it has to do with 1 drain straight into the sump the other needing to run through 9 feet of pipe vs 3. Good luck- I built one of these too in the past, better IMO than Duso; http://home.everestkc.net/jrobertson57268/HGB/HGB_construction.html
