nhoffee
Ok, I am looking at purchasing my 1st bucket of salt. I am here a bunch of different opinions on the brand. Some are saying oh choice H2O Salt? I would like to know what salt you prefer and why.
akambience
I have noticed that most people around here prefer kent.
Trautman
Kent is the cheapest, instant ocean is fine. h20cean and salinity are for reef geeks, which i am, so i use it . I always poke around for deals. for 45 bucks you can get a bucket of kent at upscales (mention the 10% discount). I hear that Soutas has good prices too. If you are going to add a bunch of water at one time, make sure to check ph first. I hear kent has wack ph unless you let it sit for a few hours
Mr. Reef
Ok' date=' I am looking at purchasing my 1st bucket of salt. I am here a bunch of different opinions on the brand. In 2010 a aquarium water testing lab put all of the salts out there to the test. Kent came out number one in lowest concentration of copper. This Is appeasing to me because it was proven in studies a long time ago that salt that contains less copper is greatly beneficial to invertebrates. I run a aquaculturing facility so you can see why that is so important to me. Plus the salt has always been well balanced. The only other brand I recommend at the moment is Coralife and it was the 2nd lowest in copper concentration. -Ricky Soutas Jr.
DennisW
Was using the new Bionic 4 part salt but am going back to red sea coral pro. Dennis

I wonder if it is different now that they reformulated
Mr. Reef
Could you site the study? It would be interesting to read up on it. I wonder if it is different now that they reformulated Unfortunately I lost my old link to the 2010 study, but I managed to find the 2008 study. Pretty old, but still on the beaten path so to say: http://aquariumwatertesting.com/AWT_Salt_Analysis_0208.pdf I'm sure Kent is spending more on their formulation now that they're removing the more expensive bag labeling process. Makes me happy even though I liked the nice bright logos on their 50 gal bags. It's what's inside that really matters though. -Ricky Soutas Jr. P.S. If you can find the 2010 study link please send a copy to me. It was pretty useful literature that I forgot to save or make copies of.DOH!
impur
Just to throw out another option, I have been using Reef Crystals for 3 or 4 years now and i like it very much. It has high levels of alk, calcium, and mag so you don't have to dose as often. It dissolves quickly and doesn't leave behind any residue like some i've used - Oceanic & Red Sea Coral Pro. Its cheap too, i get 200gal boxes for $45-$
Jeramy
I also use reef crystals but only for the last 2 months befor that I had no salt water to mix =) so yeah. But I realy do like the cost to performance ratio and my corals seem to be very happy.

Remember....If you are switching SALT and doing a large water change, it's recommended to " BLEND" the old salt with new salt as opposed to doing a dramatic or sudden change to your tank. siskiou
Another vote for Reef Crystals, and I totally agree with newfisher about *slowly* introducing new salt by blending! I ran out once and used Instant Ocean, and my sps definitely showed their dislike.
Mandinga
Salts I have enjoyed: Instant Ocean Reef, Reef Crystals, and Brightwell. Have had problems with: _ _ _ _
