culp686
i am getting ready to do a refugium on the FOWLR tank and i was wondering if i need to put baffles in to seperate the macros? will egg crate be enough to keep them apart if i do need baffles? or can i just leave it as an open tank and let everything grow together? fpd4308
I let everything grow together but some prefer to separate things. I think it is just a preference thing.
ReeFit
i baffle them because cheato likes to free float and get light to all sides, my caulerpa likes rock and sandbed to attach to and halimeda needs lots of light and is a slow grower which gets easily taken over by the caulerpa if its allowed to mix. culp686
so if i put a wall of eggcrate to make a chamber for the cheato and leave the rest open for caulerpa would that work?
ReeFit
so if i put a wall of eggcrate to make a chamber for the cheato and leave the rest open for caulerpa would that work? Caulerpa is like blackberry vines or ivy. It will grow over, around and through anything it can. I would not recommend using egg crate with it. Cheato is much more forgiveing. OwenReefin
Tangent question, but can a refugium be used as a quarantine tank if I were to temporary disconnect it from the sump system (separate fuge tank)? Such as if I was to disconnect it from the sump while I needed a Q tank, then afterwards putting specimen in tank then reconnecting it. lol really don't wanna do another tank for Q, but if this wouldn't work I guess I have to. jgf86123
That would be a really bad idea, unless your planning on taking everything out of the fuge tank everytime you use it as a QT, because if your fish you're planning on QT'n have anything, it can get transferred back into the main system when you put the fuge back online. Doing so kind of defeats the purpose of using one.
