reef165
IMO a return pump dosn't/shouldn't be so many GPH. Sure ya need to tank turnover to be ALOT to get the detrious into the water colum and such, but when that water goes through the sump you want it going slow enouph for that detrious to settle out of the colum of water. you have that much water going through a 30 or 40 gallon sump, that water is moving fast. Plus then you are also contending with the noise the water makes. Here's what I have for instance, 150 gallon tank, 60 gallon sump with about 40 gallons of water when running. My return pump is rated for 1000gph but with head pressure it is around 650/700 gph. now 1/2 that sump is my skimmer area and when I do my water changes every 2 to 4 weeks I vacume up anywhare between 1/4 to 1/2 inch of detrious out of the skimmer area. Every time I just imagine whare that stuff would be if it wern't in my sump.

Rick
Last time I was at garrets (Monday) he had a used mag 1800. That's what I'm using and it seems to be working great so far.
