siskiou Posted December 28, 2006 Posted December 28, 2006 Can someone please explain in simple terms what Redox and ORP really means (or point me to some links), please? During my search I get a lot of links about units to measure it with, but not much about what the numbers mean etc. Also, does anyone run an ozonizer and can tell me how you actually connect it to your skimmer? Do you need an air pump? If yes, doesn't the ozone slowly destroy it, and eventually the skimmer too? Thanks! Quote

There are ozoninizers out there, that will do you need them to, you have a controller with it as well...I do not believe you need to hook it to your skimmer, but yes, if stuff is coming in direct contact with it, unless it is ozone proof then it will eventually be destroyed... this should keep you reading for a while... http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-12/rhf/feature/index.php Quote
siskiou Posted December 28, 2006 Author Posted December 28, 2006 Thanks, reefgeek! I'll go peruse that article! Quote
WAVES Posted December 28, 2006 Posted December 28, 2006 ORP is "Oxidation reduction potential" it basically means "the amount of oxidation possible". Ozone is a powerful oxidizer, so powerful it nukes the water, the ORP is how much of this oxidation power is left behind. I would use it in your skimmer, but you then need to have carbon on both the air and the water output. Some ozonizers have their own air pumps, others require one (like the Gen-x which work sweet). You would want to look into an air dryer as well. Quote
siskiou Posted December 28, 2006 Author Posted December 28, 2006 Thanks! I'll have to look into this a bit more before I decide. Now, can is Redox another way to measure ORP? My future controller has a Redox probe, no ORP. And I'm a little worried my skimmer would get brittle and fall apart with time. Maybe I would have to run it on a different cheapo skimmer. And then, how to set up the carbon on the air/water output? Quote
