reefgeek84 Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 I have some hinges I would like to try and get some rust off of...I was thinking CLR, but wondering if someone has had good experience with anything else that would remove rust... Let me know. Quote
mister crabs Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 have u tried salt and lime? strange as it may sound it works on other things with rust. why not hinges? just sprinkle salt on it and then squeeze lime juice on it til its like a wet paste....let it sit for a couple hours and then scrub it off. my mom swears by this even though it sounds more like a recipe for margaritas! Nyles Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 Kids lemon flavored drink packets, I guess they use them to remove rust, and works very well. I actually seen it on TV today as I was prepping for my morning tea. Quote

Nyles Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 I had to ask wife.. lol It's LEMON Flavored drink mix. spay rust with water, put dry powder over spot, put plastic wrap over that and let sit 30 min, scrub with brush then rinse. Quote
Nyles Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 also note she sent me this in particular for BRASS. Cleaning brass. If a piece is brass plated, it will be brass on one side and solid black on the other side. You never want to use lemon on anything that is brass plated—only solid brass. Brass plated items need to be cleaned very gently with an oil soap—never use anything acidic on it. Use the same method for cleaning solid brass that you use for copper—one half of a lemon with salt sprinkled on it and rub until it is clean. Rinse well with water Quote

If it was me... I would soak it for an hour in vinegar, vinegar is the best dang cleaner on earth! I can wipe coraline off after a short soak, and remove stains, clean pipes, steralize my phytoplankton bottles and lines!!!! VINEGAR! (White distiled) 1 gallon about $2 F & G RUST REMOVER Here is a way to dissolve rust from bolts, nuts and other metals. Soak in full strength vinegar and the rust will dissolve away http://www.theworkshop.net/FormulaPage.htm Quote
