BrianB
I have a extra tank in the garage that I would like to setup with zoa frags till my large tank is complete. This is my first sw tank and would like to know how much light would be good on a 30 gall tank. Tank is 30 L x 19H x 12 d. I also have a 28 gall that I could use. It is 36L x 16H x 12D. NoobtoSalt
depending on the zoas you could probably run compact florecents in a pinch to save costs so you can get your larger tank going sooner. But in the long run I would run T5's on that tank if you can.
CoralCrazy
We run a 4 bulb t5 on a 30 gallon and have no problems. We have pretty good growth with the lighting. Our light fixture is 195 watts.
ReeFit
You could run 2 t5 and be fine if you put a multiple level frag rack in there. Then just place them where they like it the most
CA2OR
Re: Zoa Lighting I have used the same light over my 36g, 72g, and now 60g....250w HQI with actinics....my tanks ARE zoa dominated and always have been Sent from my Droid
jgf86123
Brian, a fellow member, reefnjunkie, has, or rather had, I'm not sure if he still does or not, a 4 bulb T5 fixture that would be perfect for you, he's including extra bulbs, and wants 85 for it. That would be a perfect light for your tank.
ReeFit
keep in mind he's just doing this temporarily.
jgf86123
That's why I suggested Brad's light, and besides, you could turn that light around nad have one helluva fuge light

undrtkr_00
Any way to take part of the lights from your big tank while it is cycling?
BrianB
No unfortuantly I am getting a 125 from my uncle. The tank is in perfect condition but he is using no live rock horrid blue gravel and a siphon into a wet/dry setup. The stand is horrid and he uses a light strip from HD. So I have alot of work to do to get a nice tank setup. New custom stand and sump new lights etc. So the main tank will take sometime to get up and running. pledosophy
If it were me, if you plan on doing a retrofit kit and having a canopy with the new system, then I would just buy a light now for the new tank and use it over the zoa grow out tank. I run 175 MH on my 125g and like it. You could go with 250w MH's or all T5's. If you plan on going metal halides just buy your desired wattage light now and hang it over your grow out tank. It will save you money in the long run and get you on the way to your goal. Picking a bulb like a 14K would give you a balanced color and IME eliminate the need for supplemental lighting with zoa's. nwcoralfarm
I have always known zoo's to grow best (fastest growth) under vho's or t5's, however I really can't argue with Eric's results.
