Holly Posted December 10, 2006 Posted December 10, 2006 I've always loved octopii.. They seem so incredibly intelligent for something so biologically rudimentary. <3 IMO I don't think they belong in tanks; they're too smart and it usually ends in disaster, from what I've read... You can't cage something this fantastic http://www.videosift.com/story.php?id=23433 Quote
Queen Angel Posted December 10, 2006 Posted December 10, 2006 We had a octopus as a pet quite a few years back. It was the smartest thing, she would come out of her cave and come up to the surface and get hand fed by my husband. We named it Einstein but found out later it was a girl when it laid eggs. It was so sad to know once she laid eggs she was going to die. Our girls were just little things back then, they still remember the octopus in Dad's office. She is still loved and remembered. WAVES Posted December 10, 2006 Posted December 10, 2006 Im on my second octopus and neither have escaped. its an acrylic tank, I have clip on lids that leave no crack. I also put 1/4" mesh screen over my overflow teeth. No escape. I lost the first one when my external pump got wet and I was waiting for new parts, I had a PH in the tank but it wasnt enough flow, I discovered cephlopods dont have hemogloben (sp?) in there blood but rather a less effecient oxygen carrying cell. They actually have green blood according to the article I read. Quote
powdertang05 Posted December 10, 2006 Posted December 10, 2006 awesome i want one now! how big of a tank do you need to have? Quote
reefgeek84 Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 awesome i want one now! how big of a tank do you need to have? Depends on the size of one... Some are bigger then others...they used to have pgmy octo's but the source went under on them...but I have not researched in quite awhile, if you got a smaller species, you could probably get away with a 50-60 tank, I would think... Joel, what size tank do you have for yours? Quote
reefgeek84 Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 Joel, Have you ever tried putting your octo's food in a clear glass container ,and corking it, sinking it and then letting him figure it out?...I have heard this is a very cool to watch them uncork it and get their food. Quote
