Kevman
Will dosing with Epson salts mess up the other levels? Should I add something else when I dose?(scratch)
undrtkr_00
No, it shouldn't impact your other parameters (pH, alk, etc). Most people just dose magnesium by itself, IME.
nwcoralfarm
No worries there, you will not get any increases in PH or anyhting else, it is really just KH (carbonate hardness or alkalinity) that you need to be careful with. You can also add this pretty quick although if you are coming up from say 6-700 all the way up to 1500 I would spread it out over a 4-5 day period to be safe. Lowman
I would'nt make a habit of using magnesium sulphate alone, use it in conjunction with magnesium chloride. It is a more balanced approach to supplementing. There are several threads on RC about the correct proportions of each to mix together. downhill_biker
I dose 5:3 mag chloride to mag sulfate. I use 5 half cups chloride (from BRS), 3 half cups mag sulfate (epsom salts), and 1/2 gallon rodi water. Bob is right, you shouldn't dose just mag sulfate. Rick
See if you can find dow flake in the deicing stuff at HD or Lowes. I found some deicer at Walmart yesterday that has magnesium chloride and calcium chloride (both found in the dow flake) but unfortunately the main ingredient in it was sodium (salt) so it isn't the right stuff. It's the right time of year though to find it.
Kevman
So it is a deicer but not rock salt...and its called Dow Flake?
