CA2OR
I just finally loaded my 7100 build of Windows 7 as my primary OS(scary). I was using it on a virtual drive for quite some time, gaining familiarity with it, but was limited on some of the features due to the virtual machine not having complete rights to my video cards. Plus I have been quite skeptical, from previous experiences with release canidates, to load it as my only OS(scratch). And all I have to say is (clap). I was using Vista Ultimate and loved it for the most part, but this 7 Ultimate.....it's a whole nother kind of animal. Much faster, much cleaner, very happy. Graphically pleasing for sure, I believe they did a great job on this one(rock2). Cant wait for actual release(plotting). I do recommend checking it out if you have the opportunity to do so. Of course, you may find it a tad better if someone familiar with it is showing you.(naughty) Point being...if you liked Vista you are going to love this. They did remove a couple features that I was rather fond of from Vista Ultimate, such as dreamscene's, but that was an easy fix. And the additional features more than make up for it. I just can't believe how much quicker it is....reminds me of the 98 or 2k days. They really streamlined this one. I might have to make a quick video to show you guys what I am talking about. Algae
I've been hearing some good things, lately such as that it is not such a RAM hog. I know a month or so ago MS was offering a Vista-7 upgrade for $50.00 (like for like). I also heard that with a EDU (student) email address that you could get 7 for $30.00 (even Pro). Almost wothwhile registering as a student.
impur
Hmm i've been thinking of this. I'm rebuilding my computer at some point, probably to be able to play Diablo 3, and was thinking about loading Win7 onto it. I'd rather go with the full install versus an upgrade. impur
Yah no doubt. Pushed back to 2010 now and they release Starcraft 2 in 2010. Maybe a double release for Blizz next year??
USCG CWO
I am not holding my breath. To many good games being pushed till next year. Sorry Eric I didn't mean to side track your thread. I do plan on upgrading both my systems to Windows 7 but after some time has gone by. Windows tends to be buggy upon initial release. Anyone know if they are releasing both a 32 or 64 bit or is it just going to be 64 bit?
Rick
I am not holding my breath. To many good games being pushed till next year. Sorry Eric I didn't mean to side track your thread. I do plan on upgrading both my systems to Windows 7 but after some time has gone by. Windows tends to be buggy upon initial release. Anyone know if they are releasing both a 32 or 64 bit or is it just going to be 64 bit? They will have a 32 bit version. (I was looking over the information on it a few days ago) I will probably have to upgrade right away to make sure my software is still compatible. I don't really care about it hogging the ram (I would rather that than hard drive thrashing from a swap file) but I do hope they have done some work on the way it handles graphics. Vista tends to push graphics to the point that other apps sometimes struggle to use them. Been waiting for Starcraft 2 myself. Hopefully they will not make it into an online game which seems to be the trend these days. I still pull out the original Starcraft once in awhile. CA2OR
yeah, but 7 should resolve those issues with graphic compatability. Even though it has some sweet graphic features of it's own. But it is proving to show that Vista was a mistake. Had they went from XP to 7 all would have been good.
markdadof2
Thru my development licensing with Microsoft I have been running the windows 7 Mfg release since August and LOVE It so far.
Mr. Reef
I've been hearing some good things' date=' lately such as that it is not such a RAM hog.[/quote'] Right there, that is the reason I tend to stick to Windows XP. I made my own computer and this is what I have more control/experience with. I'm tempted to install Windows 7 as my new OS though. I'll have to do more research first to see if it is a RAM hog or not. Ricky Soutas Jr. -Soutas Saltwater & Reef Inc.-
Krux
win 7 uses less resources than vista, and will save you a good chunk of your hard drive on a fresh install. I can do a fair chunk of gaming and photo shopping on my media server which only has 2 gigs of ram, needed 4 to run the same programs on vista... of course my 8 gigs and a i5 on my main computer run things much smoother, but thats proof legacy systems will still benefit... i even run wow and battleforge on my old quad bluray ripping nas box with integrated graphics... upon release there will be a family version of home for 150 bucks that will give you licenses for 3 installs, not a bad deal if you have several computers that need it. All of the big things in vista ultimate are now in the basic win 7, so unless you are running an enterprise server or are doing a lot of development work, ultimate is no longer necessary for things like media streaming, which is a huge plus. registration for a .edu 29 dollar license takes about 2 minutes if anyone falls into that category, maybe some of you alums still have old school email addresses that are valid and can get a copy on the cheap. ive been running the rc since june on 5 different systems, it is what windows should have been for the last 5 years. nwcoralfarm
As far as I am concerned, no Windows operating system is worth installing until it has been out for at least 1 year. That's when they find all the major flaws not found in testing and correct them. To be honest with you though, I have been threatening to go mac or Linux for years and just might. When ole Gates figures he has enough money and doesn't need to kill me for 200 $ every couple years for an operating system with major security flaws and blue screens every so often, then I might change my mind. grassi
I'm a programmer and I use unix platforms for work. At home I switched to Os X less or more 7 years ago and I'm happy with that. I use Windows os's on vmware no more than 10 minutes a week for testing purposes and it is more than enought lol
CA2OR
in my experiences so far it is NOT a RAM hog. I run ultimate, of course, and run dreamscene's

That is pretty close to what my experience has led me to recommend. I typically tell everyone to wait until the first service pack is released before making a change. But I just ordered my windows 7 ultimate today and will be installing it on Oct 22nd.
