Found Cheap Local Source For Sugar Sand

After a long time searching, I finally found cheap, local, sugar size, white sand.

Where of all places?

Home Depot on Murray and hwy 26

I had check there before many times, but this last time I was in, there it was.

It was marked as Quickcrete Arena Sand, Medium Sized.

It was in a green and black labeled bag. The bag, like most sand and concrete bags was brown like a shopping back. They had a full pallet, so guessing its pretty new.

Best part? $7.78 for 100 pounds. Bought two bags this weekend and it looks really nice.

I remember being part of a discussion a year or more ago on here where a bunch of us were looking for it, so hope this helps someone.

Do you have it in your tank yet? Just wondering the waviness of it from the powerheads and whatnot. I would like to use this as I plan on getting some small sand sifters and I would like to have the natural wave in the sand but I don't want it to be flying all over the place... How about a video maybe?(naughty)

I do, but its in there curing with my LR. It moves from the waves (around 35x turnover), but when I open more outlets on my CL it settles down just fine. Looks like a molded substrate, its that fine. Not sure about a vid, my Camcorder is a bit older and I have to run it through software which is a PITA to get things saved. It has formed nice dunes from the CL......I will try to get a pic tomorrow for you

No biggy if you can't but I would love to see it if you can... I love the wavy dunes look if it gets made naturally, it looks awesome...

I've used that sand in the past and didn't have positive results. Diatom algae proved to be uncontrollable and tank was a constant dust storm. I went through so many impeller shafts I lost count. If a fish did even the slightest amount of digging, the tank looked like a milky white cloud and took quite some time to clear up. I wanted white sand, but brown diatoms constantly covered the surface of the sand. I ended up finally taking it out.

If you've already put it in your tank, see how it goes. Perhaps you will have better results than I did. Every tank is different.

Another inexpensive options would be pool filter sand. It is available for around $10 - $15 for a 50 lb bag and comes in a variety of colors. I switched to that and my diatom algae problem went away. It also has slightly larger grain size, so it won't be blown around the tank as easily as the Home Depot white sand. Any local spa store carries it.
