CA2OR
So we are getting close to starting this competition. Please place your vote on whether or not you agree with the rules\guidelines layed out below. We already have the initial colony ready to be picked up and fragged which was generously donated by Lowman. All we need is agreements from all. Simple rules to follow: 1. Must do a quick writeup of their system on the competition thread in the beginning. eg. size, flow, light, placement of the zoos, coral food, fish, etc 2. Must document the progress of the zoas on a biweekly basis. 3. Must have access to a camera to show proof of their coral in 3 months. 4. No cheating. Cheaters will be banned from current and future competitions!!! 5. If there was a tie, you guys can split the prize. Not following the rules can cause you to be disqualified and sorry no money back. Guidelines 1. Pieces used for grow out. As mentioned above there would be an issue with acclimation. I think that the colonies should be purchased or donated from a store. For instance, I pick up a colony from Waves on the 13th, I would frag it on the 15th for competition prizes. I also think that no matter whether or not you already have some of what we are starting with you should have to use some from the same colony as everyone else involved. 2. Delivery of frag pieces. Following same set up. Frag on the 15th, ship to long distance competitors overnight on the 17th, make pieces available to pick up on the 18th to locals and competition would start on the 20th. I figure ship the day before so everyone gets their pieces on the same day. All remaining pieces of the colony would be sold or offered as an addition to say the 3rd place prize. If sold the proceeds would be applied to prize pieces, colonies, and shipping, which I will address later. 3. Timespan of competition. I figure that 2 or 3 months is a good time. Allow say 2 weeks for acclimation and healing, then the competition runs for another 6week to 10 weeks. This will give EVERYONE the same advantage\disadvantage with acclimation and so on. Pictures will be required frequently for updates. Cheaters will be banned from current and future competitions, posting frequent pic's should discourage as all will be able to see and speak up if need be. 4. Shipping. I think that for at least the first competition, if we have long distance competitors we could ship to a agreed upon individual and all those local to them can pick up from there. As Reefboy, for instance, has mentioned he would ship prizes pieces at no cost, or the entry fee money remaining will help, if not, pay for shipping. 5. Entry Fee. Entry fee will be $10 to PNWMAS members and $15 to non PNWMAS members. As I have stated before, the entry fee will pay for colonies and prize pieces. I would like to see any left over entry money and money from the sale of polyps not used in competition, to go right back into the next competitions pieces and colonies as this will only improve the quality and caliber of these pieces and the competition itself. A list of all involved will be posted on the thread for the grow out when it starts so all know who is involved and can get an idea of the money brought in so all is content with that as well. Honesty is going to be key all the way around in this competition. 6. Picking grow out colonies. I think it is only fair to put it to a vote before each competition. That way the competitors can pick what we are starting with. Any objections? 7. Sponsor interaction with the competition. I figure if sponsors involved in the competition want to also participate with thier personal\home tanks that, that should be accepted. Just my opinion, but as most of you know several sponsors are also owners of personal tanks. 8. Determining winner. I think winner should be based off polyp count. IF THERE IS A TIE, the contestants would split the prize and an extra or 2 may be thrown in. Same with second and third. Also maybe we have the first place winner also gets free admision to next competition. Just a thought. Should there be a tie between more than 2 contestants, pictures will be posted (without names to prevent favoritism) for a vote, kind of like the pic of the month, based on development, color, and so on. COReefer
perfect. You will my entry fee on sunday when I come over. I like the idea. What about the 2 week acclimation period?? I think that would be a great idea and would do nothing but benefit all of us.

Rick
#7 seems both confusing and more complicated than necessary to me. It also seems to pressure sponsors to donate prizes to fit a specific winning position rather than donating what they choose. (Normally prizes are picked to fit winning positions after the donations based on the prize value) #5 is still a stickler for me as well although I think we covered my position on it already. CA2OR
Rick-the only reason I have #7 like that is not to pressure sponsors. More to make sure that one sponsor isn't always asked to donate a first place prize. Idealy we have nicer first then second, second than third prizes. I figured by rotating would aleve the pressure or cost of donating more expensive pieces. But you do make a good point. Maybe I can get sponsors to chip in here. #5, I have asked for all to pitch in thier 2c here. I agree with you on the additional $5 but would like to allow everyone to speak up if they have a reason as why we shouldn't.
CA2OR
Need more votes here. Sooner we get agreements or modifications done the sooner we get started.
COReefer
lol noone's on but if we can get this going, I can pick up my polyp(s) on sunday and we can get this thing rolling. I don't know if I'm more stoked about the competition, the purple deaths, or the new light. Holy smokes
CA2OR
I am with you there. I hope I win. I don't know what prizes are yet, but I still wanna win.
CA2OR
#7 revised After all revisions are made, one more poll will be posted to see if all agree before competition begins.
COReefer
I like the revised version of 7. If the sponsors wanna go at it with us that's cool. I don't think they have an advantage just because they have shops. Matter of fact, some get neglected a little bit more because the business is extremely time consuming.
CA2OR
right. But I think allowing them to have in shop might not be seen as very fair, they have access to far more and better equipment than most of us.
Nyles
If you guys do this I want to see one of you or even a couple of you do a horizontal mount for comparison.
JManrow
I am with you there. I hope I win. I don't know what prizes are yet' date=' but I still wanna win.[/quote'] It looks like a good competition. Sorry I don't have time for involvement right now. I have a family emergency and I am not at not forums much lately. Thanks for keeping me posted on your progress by sending PM's. You are responsible for this Eric. I see it is not posted in the Member's Forum and appears to be open to anyone. Good luck on this.
COReefer
for everyone who has voted so far......thanks.
Rick
Eric, it probably isn't necessary to have another poll. You can move the one vote for modifications up to the agree column now as the minor changes you made cover the only concerns I had making it look like a winner. John, Thanks for the support and allowing us to have this competition. We all hope you get your emergency resolved and that things will turn out well for you. snowpunk
one thing I forgot to mention to you when we were talking about this was a limit on entries. Some people have multiple tanks or enough area in their tank to house multiples and get different results. We should probably put something in about that. My opinion is that maybe a maximum entry limit of 2 be placed on the game. that covers those with 2 tanks or who want to try different flows/lights/heights. Another thought is maybe having everyone post up tank basics, like size and lights and pumps/reactors at first. Then when a winner has been deemed have them tell all the specifics so we can post it up for others to learn from. On the list of specifics could be temp ph alk calc and all the others plus any special additives they use, what coral food they use, what flow they had it in what light level they placed it in and anything else they may be able to add to help all the others inhance their coral growth in the future. We could go also make a list for the winners to fill out so things aren't forgot. As soon as the game idea was presented I looked at it as a way to better everyones coral growth by learning from others, oh and winning stuff would be cool too! Another thing, and this would be totally up to the sponsors. It may help to have sponsors help with fragging if and when they can. This may save on the downtime between pickup and shipping of the coral. I know shop owners are busy so it would be more of a helpful thing they could do if they are feeling extra extra extra nice ... not so much a rule their but just a tought. COReefer
what's wrong with the rules and guidelines?? If you don't agree with them, you need to speak up. Not vote and run. Can't be fixed if nothings said.
CA2OR
The systems configurations should be posted in the competition thread just before it starts. In addition all the contestants would be listed so all know how many contestants there are and can pretty much do the math on numbers if there are questions. I am also considering bring someone else in, if someone else wants to be involved, to control the finances so there are no grey area's with the money and all fee's\funds are accounted for. This competition is not to designed with anyone's profit in mind. I was thinking that whatever money wasn't used for next colony or prize pieces could be used for gift certificates to the sponsors involved. So far, we have Purple Deaths to start (donated by Lowman) and the next set is Alien Eye's (donated by Garrettm85) the following competition pieces would be voted on by contestants to provide a variety of species and in turn results. The goal of this competition covers a couple different paths. First, it will provide a variety of corals to all involved. Second, it will provide information regarding the best system configurations, feeding, what have you, to obtain maximum results in growth for the species used. Third, prizes....duh. Forth, to promote future members for the PNWMAS. Fifth, hopefully generate some more interest in our sponsors. Again, PROFIT is not the goal. I do not anticipate receiving any profit for this competition outside of whatever prizes I may win.
