  1. It's that time again Folks!!! The Annual Hatfield Marine Science Center meeting is at hand! June is a wonderful month to get out to our lovely Newport Coast to have an amazing educational presentation, killer barbecue, and a great time on the beach. Come and hang out with the rest of us PNWMAS crew this next month at our Newport Coast! The head director Sid wanted me to mention that he had a couple surprises for us in store such as... a back of the house tour for those who have not been behind the scenes before, an on-site cookout w/ refrigeration available for anyone, picnic tables, restrooms and prep space available, and an informative presentation in his lab. It's always a lovely day for a drive to the coast on these warm summer Saturdays. Take a gander at some of our previous years gatherings, education, exciting, and fun all rolled into one. Microscope slides of protazoans and parasite. A glimpse at the complete inner workings of the HMSC quarantine center. and a possible hands on health workshop demonstration, this one was done on their resident giant wolf eel a couple years back, that was awesome!.. And what a trooper. Nothing like this all year until now, the annual Hatfield Marine Science Center meeting. Where - 2030 SE Marine Science Dr, Newport, OR 97365 When - June 22nd 1:00 PM until the BBQ is done... What - An educational trip with the facilities director Sid! And a great time to hang out with the rest of us PNWMAS crew, all while on our wonderful summer time coast line in the pacific north west's back yard. Whoop Whoop!!!
  2. We bring you another public PNWMAS announcement, the Annual summer MHSC visit is almost upon us and the day is set for this informative upcoming meeting. Last year the weather was wonderful making the trip to the Newport Coast fabulous for before and after visits up and down our west coast! Sid is doing his best to make sure we have access to their personal break area which includes an indoor and outdoor alcove with benches, picnic area, and a grill spot sporting a Weber BBQ. I recommend a potluck style event were you can bring a dish and sample others so bring something healthy, or bring something sweet, just bring something good to eat. You all will want to save the date on the calendar for this one. June 30th 12:00 at the Hatfield Marine Science Center. 2030 SE Marine Science Dr, Newport, OR 97365 And for those of you who don't know the facility has had a recent overhaul a couple months back improving just about everything there is, so it should have plenty new to see even for those of us who have attended the previous years. And if all this wasn't enough reason to come out, the director Sid is going to take us to a different wing of the marine center and give us a personal hands on fish health workshop demonstration! Here are a few pics from last years killer presentation. Last year this was an amazing experience in which we learned a number of protocols implemented in a facility like the HMSC including skin scrapes, gill samples, microscope identifications, and health assessment. I mean who wouldn't want to get the knowledge and experience of this kind of nitty gritty tooth and claw kind of stuff!. There is much to see and learn here. Say AAAHHHH Mr. Wolf Eel, its time for your check up. Looking forward to seeing you all there.
  3. Well folks, we have some exciting news about this months meeting!!! On Saturday July 22, PNWMAS will be making the annual trip out to the Hatfield Marine Science Center but this year we are shaking things up with a change in the routine. Sid , the director at the MHSC, is going to take us through the building and into the west wing of the science center to give us a hands on animal health work up and exam, he says that there are at least two other animals for this workshop. Now I personally do not know what "fish/animals" these will be but I know I can learn a thing or two about diagnosis and treatment so this will be extremely educational. I have to also mention that I Love these trips out to the science center, they are always a Blast, and for a few reasons. Let me explain... Reason #1- Super Geek Out! Sid is a specialist in his fields and is a wonderful person to ask questions and get information from. There has not been a time talking with this man that I did not learn something new, from the sounds of it we are about to get to the nitty gritty in the fish health exam. And lets not forget that this is a Marine Science Center!!! So much to do and see, there are several impressive displays last time I was in and a few hands on demos with a nice touch tank near the front lobby area. Reason #2- The Coast! The beach, the seafood, and the sea life! These are all things that should be on ones agenda when heading West to our Pacific Ocean. Late July should be for some pretty decent weather too so more reason to come out and join us. I might even bring my flip flops and do a little beach combing with you. Reason #3- Us PNWMAS crew, we will all be there not only during the presentation but afterwards as well to have a nice social gathering. Last year many of us ate at a local fish house together but this year we are doing our best to work out a location for a possible BBQ so stay tuned on that folks. It's gonna be fun in the sun with your favorite club. Here are some meeting details below.... Hatfield Marine Science Center - Visitor Center 2030 SE Marine Science Drive Newport, Oregon 97365-5296 We suggest arriving at 10:30 AM since the actual demonstration will begin at 11:00AM. Come on out and take a look at the operations and educational facilities at HMSC.
